The earliest dated collection of short stories from the Isle of Man, ‘Manx Tales’ offers 15 stories by almost entirely anonymous authors. The stories circle around the traditional traditions and beliefs of men in the south of the Island. The world depicted in these stories is one where fairies, bugganes and even the devil have a very real presence on the island; here you will find stories of being terrorised by Black Dogs on the way to court farm girls on a neighbouring farm, building a church with a horse possessed by the devil, and spending the night on-board a fairy boat out with the Peel fishermen.
