Steven Guzzo scored with2:53 left in regulation time tolift the Oakville Blades to a 4-3win over the Trenton GoldenHawks Saturday in OntarioJunior A Hockey League play atJoshua’s Creek Arenas.

Mark McGowan, StefanTrojanovic and Mark Bennettalso tallied for the Blades, whoimproved to 34-6-1 on the sea-son. Oakville sits seven pointsbehind the Kingston Voyageursfor first place in the leaguestandings, but has two games inhand.

Blades goaltender DanielSavelli made 24 saves to earn thevictory Saturday. Oakville out-shot Trenton 46-27 on the night,

including 36-15 in the final twoperiods.

The previous evening atJoshua’s Creek, Oakvilleroughed up the Buffalo Jr.Sabres 7-3. Bennett led the waywith a hat trick, while RyanMurphy contributed a goal andthree assists. Also scoring goalswere Kyle Lysaght, Josh Ranalliand Guzzo. Mike Morissettestopped 20 of 23 shots for thewin.

The Blades play two morehome games this weekend. TheCouchiching Terriers visitJoshua’s Creek Friday and theCollingwood Blues are in townSaturday. Both contests start at7:30 p.m.

Guzzo’s late goal lifts Blades

It was a good weekend to be aLumberjack.

Oakville Lumberjacks teams werecrowned champions in both theatom and peewee divisions at theMinor Oaks Hockey Association’sannual Frank Sabatino Memorialhouse league tournament last week-end.

Both division finals were all-Oakville matchups. The atomLumberjacks defeated the Wranglers2-1, while the peewee Lumberjacksedged the Eagles 2-1 in overtime.Both games were played Sunday atJoshua’s Creek Arenas.

In the atom game, theLumberjacks jumped out to a 2-0first period lead before the Wranglers’Nathan Taylor narrowed the score to2-1. Kevin Longhurst and James

McLean had the goals for theLumberjacks, while goaltender RyleyWells was named game MVP by thetournament committee.

Also contributing to the atomchampionship were AlexanderBowman, Hayden Coulman, WilliamEadie, Tristan Fowler, Thomas Gay,Samuel Gima, Kyle Medd, Jordan Ng,Zoe O’Neill, Adam Quesnel, HarrisonReimer, Benjamin Sosniak andThomas Trudelle. Gary O’Neill coach-es the team, Jeff Longhurst is thetrainer and Peter Gima is the manag-er.

The peewee contest had an evenmore climactic finish. After multipleovertimes, game MVP MichaelFerrari scored his second goal of thematch to lift the Lumberjacks to vic-tory. Robbie Folino had the Eagles’

Dan Dawson’s latest return to the Air Canada Centrewas a short-lived one.

The reigning National Lacrosse League MVP andBoston Blazers captain was one of nine players tossed inthe first period of Boston’s 8-7 overtime loss to theToronto Rock Friday in Toronto.

Dawson earned his ejection 4:39 into the game afterfighting Rock defenceman Pat McCready, one of fourscraps during an early stoppage in play.

Dawson’s brother, Paul, had gotten into a spiritedbout with Toronto captain Colin Doyle minutes earlier.Paul Dawson and Doyle were teammates on theBrampton Excelsiors during the Major Series Lacrosseseason last summer.

Once Doyle — one of the Rock’s top scorers — got inthe fight with Paul, Dan knew he would be targeted byToronto.

“I had to answer the bell,” said Dan, who registeredan assist before his early departure. “It’s part of the gameand I don’t mind doing it.”

The part Dawson regrets is that his fight with McCready— who he played with on the national team in 2007 —occurred during a stoppage, resulting in his ejection.

“It’s disappointing. Obviously you don’t get to play infront of family that often,” said Dawson. “I got a lot of

text messages and phone calls, everyone giving me ahard time that they came to see me play for four min-utes. They expect that from Paul, but not from me.”

The loss to Toronto was Boston’s second to the Rockin as many games this season. Dawson said the slowstart is of real concern for the Blazers, who made theplayoffs last year despite being an expansion team.

“No doubt the guys are down,” he said. “We didn’tenvision this to be the start for our season. You can feelsorry for yourself or you can use it as motivation. It’s areal wakeup call for us. We don’t want to be known asthat sophomore slump team that happens in sports.”

Line brawl makes for short night for Dawson

Last weekend was a roughone for the Oakville Ice, whichdropped a pair of road games toupper-echelon teams in theProvincial Women’s HockeyLeague.

Oakville fell 5-2 to theToronto Aeros Saturday inToronto, then dropped a 5-1decision to the Kitchener-Waterloo Rangers Sunday inKitchener.

Despite being outshot 48-14Saturday, the Ice scored twice inthe third period to pull within 3-2 before Toronto scored two latemarkers to put the game away.

Kristyn Capizzano andMegan O’Neill had the Oakvillegoals, scoring 47 seconds apart.Ali Binnington stopped 43 shots

in net for the Ice.Sunday, Oakville was once

again in the game in the thirdperiod, trailing 2-1 before theRangers broke things open withthree unanswered goals. JulieHall had the Ice’s lone goal onthe evening.

Oakville (9-13-6) will look toget back on track this weekendwhen it plays two home gamesagainst sub-.500 clubs.

The Ice will host the LondonDevilettes Saturday and theMarkham Stars Sunday. Bothgames are scheduled for 4:30p.m. starts at Joshua’s CreekArenas.

The Ice has six gamesremaining in the regular season,four of them at home.
