This is a community of wonder. At Wornick, our students discover and thrive every day. We are a community where questioning and learning drives our lessons, our play, and our every interaction. I am thrilled to lead the Wornick school community through the 2018-2019 school year and send the gratitude of an entire community of students, families, staff and friends for the generous support that makes a Wornick education possible. Todah Rabah!

Lillian Howard Interim Head of School

Lauren Newman graduated from Wornick in 2010. She went on to attend Menlo School in Atherton for high school and Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles where she majored in Marketing and minored in Psychology. At LMU, she joined a special program focused on Integrated Marketing taught by industry professionals and emphasizing hands-on, real-world projects. During her senior year, she interned at the Craftsman Agency and is now working there full-time as an Associate Marketing Manager.

“Wornick had an enormous impact on my moral, social and intellectual development. The Jewish education taught me to value community and family and to always treat others the way I want to be treated. The study of Torah and Jewish texts contributed significantly to the

analytical skills necessary for success in higher education. The small classes enabled a deeper understanding of content and taught me the value of asking questions and approaching my teachers for additional help when necessary. That skill in particular became of great value in high school, college, and particularly now in my big-girl job. I loved it and still remain close friends with my buddies and teachers. I intend to send my future children to Wornick!“

In the 4th grade JSTEAM (Judaic studies, Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) culminating project, students are placed into groups with their peers and given a Jewish value to contemplate and collaboratively discuss. Each group studies texts that reflect and reinforce their Jewish value and assess the personal meaning that mitzvah holds for them through a written drash or story. Students are then posed a real-world current dilemma

that relates to their value, which they must research and design solutions to address. By first learning the efforts others have made to solve the problem, they become involved in the local and global communities of sc ient ists and

r e s e a r c h e rs w h o have made their work public. Through extended collaboration and revision of their solutions, they are challenged to create a machine that serves or supports their Jewish value, using the Peleh Lab at Wornick to engineer their prototypes.

At the end of the JSTEAM project, students build comprehensive presentations on the Prezi platform. Their presentations are professionally delivered to an audience of their teachers, peers and families. This process empowers students to be actively engaged in the world around them and encourages them to be resourceful in fulfilling their mitzvot with a focus on JSTEAM.

The Artist Report project in 5th grade is designed to integrate multiple curricular areas and give students the chance to fully immerse themselves in the life

and work of an artist. Students hone their research skills by finding relevant sources and taking extensive notes on their artist. They then show off all they have learned through their research by writing a

biography, creating a representative work of art and presenting a PowerPoint at our Cocoa House event. During Cocoa House, students present their favorite works of art by their artist and share how they have been inspired in front of teachers, peers and families while sipping hot cocoa.

This project allows students to recognize that art is an expression of how one sees the world around them and that art reflects the time period, culture, geography and status of each artist. Through this exploration of art, students also come to understand that we can learn life lessons by studying the lives of others.

Wornick’s dual language Hebrew curriculum prepares our graduates to be conversationally proficient in Hebrew. Our teaching methodology for Hebrew learners is based on best practices recommended by the American Council of the Teaching of Foreign Languages with a focus on speaking and comprehension. Our native Hebrew students learn at a customized level according to Israel’s Ministry of Education curriculum.

Substantive research shows that students experience cognitive benefits as a result of second language learning, particularly when the target language is so different from the native language with a different alphabet and directionality. Dual language proficiency also positively influences a student’s view of language learning and other cultures. Students who master a complex language such as Hebrew are highly receptive to acquiring a third language.

This year we were delighted to launch two new Hebrew programs incorporated into the curricula. The first, Targemna, is a Hebrew translation bee, in which

students participated in translating phrases in both Hebrew to English, and English to Hebrew. The students were so successful that the final competition went into a second round, and learners were competing with native speakers. The second initiative incorporated a Hebrew Drama program. Students in both elementary and middle school prepared and performed for multiple audiences songs from the musicals Annie and High School Musical.

SHALOM IVRIT

The 8th grade Capstone Portfolio Project allows students to reflect on their academic achievements and personal growth during their time in middle school at Wornick. In this project, students choose a theme for their portfolio based on an area of growth from their past three years as learners. A student might choose the theme “growth mindset” or “critical thinking” as their focus for the portfolio. After choosing a theme, the students select artifacts from a few of their general studies, Judaic studies, Hebrew classes and one outside-of-school artifact to highlight in their portfolio. A reflective defense is written to accompany each artifact. The students include a letter of gratitude to those who supported them during their academic journeys at Wornick. These portfolios come to life in a presentation at the end of 8th grade year where faculty, students and parents are invited to join and celebrate each student’s hard work and growth.

WHY IS GIVING TO INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS LIKE WORNICK SO VITAL?Independent Schools are non-profit institutions that rely on tuition and donations, rather than government funding, to operate. The best independent schools in the country try to keep tuition down by finding other ways to generate revenue, mostly by fundraising. In fact, almost all of these schools have tuition rates that do not cover the actual expense of educating the child. Your generosity bridges this gap.

WAYS TO GIVE
