SPACE

LIVE IN THE

Everyone is part of what we hope is an innovative society. We are participants even if we are not the leaders of innovative thought.

Just as in a STEM-based society, every student is a STEM student. In an innovative society, everyone is a contributor to, or a consumer of, the process of innovation.

The reality of building capacity for the 21st century is that we do not know what the work of the future will be like (Darling-Hammond, 2007) or how technology will influence health and financial issues. The challenge is to prepare students to think critically, to engage in mental activity, or habits of mind, that “…use facts to plan, order, and work toward an end; seek meaning or explanations; are self-reflective; and use reason to question claims and make judgments…” (Noddings, 2008).

It may be that our task is not only to prepare students to “fit into the future” but to shape it. “…If the complex questions of the future are to be determined… by human beings…making one choice rather than another, we should educate youths - all of them - to join in the conversation about those choices and to influence that future…” (Meier, 2008 ).

vs.

INVENTION

INNOVATION

Invention vs. Innovation

Simply, but accurately put …

Invention is the creation of a product or introduction of a process for the first time

Innovation occurs if someone improves on or makes a significant contribution to an existing product, process or service.

Example: The microprocessor

When the microprocessor was invented, it was nothing more than another piece on the circuit board.

What Arduino and others did to that piece on the circuit board has initiated what many call a revolution in open source hardware and enabled the further invention of hundreds of thousands of products, processes and services. THAT required innovation.

If invention is a pebble tossed

in the pond, innovation is the

rippling effect that pebble

causes.

Someone has to toss the

pebble. That’s the inventor.

Someone has to recognize the

ripple will eventually become a

wave. That’s the entrepreneur.

VALUE IN THE MARKET-PLACE

Many GREAT ideas fail because it takes more than innovative thinking to BE innovative.

The first course in Ten80’s Innovation Space 3D series introduces the five topics listed here as ones to evaluate during each development phase.

It really does take a team. There really is a place for everyone in the Innovation Space.

Don’t forget that the ‘Space’ in Innovation space is both mental and physical.

vs.

PRINTING

PROCESS

3D Printing 101

Not a single master plumber learned to use a wrench by taking Wrenches 101.

3D printers, like wrenches, are tools. Learn how to print in 3D as one step in the design process.

Process NOT Just Printing

While 3D Printing may be obsolete when these kids reach the job market, the lessons they learn about design and innovation will last a lifetime.

3D PRINTING LAB

Innovation Station 3D

Become a community resource or enhance your current offering.

Encourage active participation in the design process from the first spark of an idea to its final production and integration into the market (that could be a marketplace of ideas or financial markets).

Innovation Station 3D

The “IS3D” Includes:

1. Hardware

2. Software

3. Process = Innovation

Space 101 course

4. Projects & Practice

College or Universities

K-12 Classrooms & Clubs

Media Centers & Libraries

Hardware

Expand an existing lab or

seed a new space with table-

top Cubify printers from 3D

Systems.

Need access to other tools

like laser cutting? Use the

National STEM League “Swap

Shop” to trade with others.

Software

Cubify Invent, a 3-D CAD program, is included with Cubify printers.

“Ten80 students” can download SolidWorks, a leading 3-D CAD programs.

Access thousands of ready-to-print designs from public resources like Thingiverse, 3dcontentcentral.

Process

Ten80 developed the Innovation Space 101 course to guide this country’s best science educators through the process of innovation using 3D design and printing tools.

The course is now also available for you and those you teach.

MIDDLE & HIGH

Projects & Practice

The National STEM League (NSL) is a practice league for future professionals.

Students own their own team or business that specializes in motorsports, robotics, energy and/or innovation.

MIDDLE & HIGH

Projects & Practice

National STEM League (NSL) teams collaborate, create and can compete internally, online and at face-to-face Invitationals.

Engineer a fast, efficient and stable car to perform on road, oval and drag courses.

Redesign the base technology: a 1/10 scale, electric radio-controlled car that has over 4 million setup options.

Teach a robot to navigate and map a maze.

Redesign the base technology: an Arduino-driven, 4-wheel or tread driven rover.

In 2015-16, teach the rover to teach an unmanned aerial vehicle to navigate a course.

No matter the project, how will you power it?

Innovation takes practice ... So get started.
