For-profit organisations have spent millions of $ to develop an application. They can determine the terms of use freely, however:Claim wanting to "change the world"- "Fake ethics" - business interest override ethical considerations and fairnessFull T&C are often dispersed over numerous documents, real terms camuflagedCarefully crafted vague and ambigous terms and policies allow the broadest interpretation
I B

"One of our core values is to make decisions based on the best long-term interests of ourmembers ..." "Members first" - as long as they serve our purposes as long as they comply with the terms and policies (LinkedIn, 2014, p. 21.)
Compulsory vs optional information(Real) name, email address , mobile number
and password is required to open an accountOther information, such as location,
qualifications, employment history, payment details are optional
Users decide how much information they provide about themselves, however the more information they provide the higher their ranking and visibility will be
Once posted, it becomes public and members in fact have no control over how is it used by the company or anyone else.
LinkedIn is watching you all the time!Rule: every piece of information is valuable, therefore personal, behavioral and technical data is collected and stored indefinitely.- Customer behaviour is constantly monitored and analysed - 360 degree surveillance (frequency of visits, activities, searches, posts, groups, contacts, ads)- Data collected includes address book and other contacts, calentar entries- Information is shared with third parties, LinkedIn also receives information from third parties
Technical information (cookies and beacons)- Regulated by Privaty Policy and Cookie Policy- Accepting the use of both persistent and session cookies and other technologies is compulsory- Information collected includes log files, IP addresses, ISP details and information about devices- the list of tracking methods is not exhaustive, members authorise LinkedIn to collect any type of information in any way that may becomes available in the future.
How information is usedCollecting information for you about you...
Information can be used for authentification and security purposes, or improving services
BUT, it is mostly not about you!Data mining = more $$$.
Information is shared with affiliates and third partiesReal concern: while users MUST provide real information, they MUST agree that their data is processed by undisclosed service providers.
Copyright PolicyAlthough LinkedIn uses your content and guarantees no accuracy of the information- the user is responsible for any content posted on their website- copyright infringement may give rise to personal liability- the policy describes in detail the procedure to be followed in case of suspected copyright violation and also- how to report abuse/inappropriate content
Costs vs benefits - How much is too much?
There is no doubt that LinkedIn is the most effective community for professionals and businessess.
It is worth to give up our freedom to rip the benefits?
Each of us must make his/her own decision. You can create an authentic profile and
network effectively without telling people EVERYTHING about yourself.
Don`t assume anyting - read the terms and policies yourself to realise the magnitude of
your decision to share information.
Thank you for your attention
I trust that this short presentation highlighted some important issues in relation to privacy, copyright and other topics that you will consider when signing up to LinkedIn.
