MARKET REVIEW
Market Review
Ÿ Equity Market rose by 7% owing to indications of a strong incumbent government, de-escalation in geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan and optimism over US-China trade negotiations. BSE Midcap Index and BSE Smallcap Index were up 8% and 10%.
Ÿ On the economy front, CPI inflation rose to 2.57% in February as against 1.97% in January while WPI inflation firmed to 2.93% as against 2.8% in January. IIP growth was mild at 1.7% in January compared to an upward revised print of 2.6% in December.
Ÿ Sector-wise indices – For month of March, Realty followed by Banking and consumer durables sector indices outperformed and returned 15.8%, 13.6% and 11.5% respectively.
Ÿ FMCG and IT sector indices underperformed the market during the month returning 3.4% and 0.2% respectively.
Capital flows:
FIIs were net buyers in the equity to the tune of ₹ 33,981 crores
(US$4,886mn) in March 2019. Cumulatively, FIIs sold equity worth
₹ 88 crores (US$ 13mn) in last twelve months i.e. from Apr- Mar-19 and
DII bought equity worth ₹ 86,132 crores (US$12.27bn) for the same
period. (As on 30th March 2019, Source: SEBI) (March 2019 Avg. 1
USD = INR 69.54).
Outlook
Ÿ April will see the beginning of 4QFY19 results from Indian
companies. Among large cap, Infosys, is expected to kick start the
earning season by announcing its results in mid-April. This Quarter will
be interestingly watch as to how various sectors deliver post modest
December quarter results.
Ÿ Among key sectors, the slippages and asset quality trends in banks
remains benign. Corporate banks will likely keep provisions elevated
as they look to further improve PCR. NIMs across banks should be
under pressure due to elevated slippages due to IL&FS, tighter liquidity
and increased CoD and seasonality pressure on NIMs.
Ÿ IT companies would benefit from strong deal flow and increasing
digital deal sizes which would be offset to some extent with slower
spending growth in budgets in Fy2020.
Ÿ The auto sector, on the other hand would report subdued numbers

on the back of weak auto sales numbers in the past few months coupled
with increase in commodity prices, higher discount levels and negative
operating leverage.
Ÿ Consumer companies are expected to see some moderation in
volume growth, impacted by tapering of rural growth, weak seasonality
and base normalization. However, EBITDA margins would be healthy
driven by cost-saving initiatives and benign QoQ raw material basket.
Ÿ We continue to believe that the Indian equity market will have to deal
with a great deal of macro and political uncertainty over the next few
months stemming from
Ÿ (a) continued debate around global slowdown,
Ÿ (b) related monetary policy actions of global central banks, and
Ÿ (c) national elections in India.
All the above, coupled with reasonably high valuations, make us stay
cautious on the market.
Market Review
Ÿ The month of March saw the Bond yields declining across maturities in sovereign and corporate bonds. One of the main announcement was that of long dated forex swap auction to infuse durable liquidity.
Ÿ The Reserve Bank bought around 5 billion $ on 26th March 2019 in a three year forward contract and agreed to reverse the same at the end of three years.
Ÿ Forward premiums declined and this might attract more FPI flows. Bond markets which were expecting a repo rate cut in the coming policy in April due to lower inflation, rallied further on liquidity announcement.
Ÿ Another important announcement was the gross and net borrowing for first half starting April 2019.
Ÿ Around 4.4 trillion rupees gross will be borrowed weekly through 26 auctions (net figure around 3.4 trillion due to maturity).
Ÿ At 62% the borrowing program is front loaded. While there is expected pressure on longer end, rate cut expectations and investor interest in shorter papers will stabilize the markets and lead to steepning.
Ÿ Weekly borrowing will be around 17000 crores from around 12000 crores last year. The belly of the curve of 10-14 years might witness higher borrowing (around 32% of the borrowing).
Ÿ Going ahead the Fixed Income markets will anxiously wait for the April policy announcement for any news on rate action and any additional announcement on stance change.
Ÿ Currency swap has injected durable liquidity and it gives confidence to the central bank to conduct such exercise again if required besides OMO.
Ÿ Globally Fed is sounding dovish indicating no immediate rate action. Having said this, we will closely monitor the oil prices and monsoon as we approach June.

Maturity profile: Maturity is a term defined with respect to Debt Instruments which have fixed maturities after which they cease to exist on payment of the principal and the stipulated interest. A fund's profile consisting of the allocation of the value of assets in terms of percentage and their time left to maturity respectively is called a maturity profile. It gives a summary of the breakup of the value of assets with different specified maturities.
Holdings: The holdings or the portfolio is a mutual fund’s latest or updated report statement of investments/securities. These are usually displayed in terms of percentage to net assets or the rupee value or both. The objective is to give investors an idea of where their money is being invested by the fund manager.
Minimum Additional Amount: This is the minimum investment amount for an existing investor in a mutual fund scheme.
Macaulay Duration: Macaulay Duration is the weighted average term to maturity of the cash flows from a bond. The weight of each cash flow is determined by dividing the present value of the cash flow by the price.
Nature of Scheme: The investment objective and underlying investments determine the nature of the mutual fund scheme. For instance, a mutual fund that aims at generating capital appreciation by investing in stock markets is an equity fund or growth fund. Likewise, a mutual fund that aims at capital preservation by investing in debt markets is a debt fund or income fund. Each of these categories may have subcategories.
NAV: The NAV or the net asset value is the total asset value per unit of the mutual fund after deducting all related and permissible expenses. The NAV is calculated at the end of every business day. It is the value at which the investor enters or exits the mutual fund.
Portfolio turnover ratio: Portfolio turnover is a measure of how frequently assets within a fund are bought and sold by the managers. This ratio measures the fund's trading activity, which is computed by taking the lesser of purchases or sales and dividing by average monthly net assets.
Portfolio Yield: Disclosure only required for Debt Funds.
Rating Profile: Mutual funds invest in securities after evaluating their creditworthiness as disclosed by the ratings. A depiction of the mutual fund in various investments based on their ratings becomes the rating profile of the fund. Typically, this is a feature of debt funds.
Risk Free Returns: MIBOR rate for 1 day. To be sourced from FIMMDA (http://www.fimmda.org) for last day of the month.
Sector allocation: Sector allocation may be defined as an allocation of funds in a certain percentage of the portfolio in different sectors of the economy.
Sharpe Ratio: The Sharpe Ratio, names after its founder, the Nobel Laureate William Sharpe, is a measure of risk-adjusted returns. It is calculated using standard deviation and excess return to determine reward per unit of risk.
SIP: SIP or systematic investment plan works on the principle of making periodic investments of a fixed sum. Its works similar to a recurring bank deposit. For instance, an investor may opt for an SIP that the invests Rs 500 every 15 of the month in an equity fund for a period of three years.
SIP Return: The SIP return calculation should be based on Rs. 10,000 invested every month. Returns would be 1 year, 3 year, 5 year, 7 year etc.
Standard Deviation: Standard deviation is a statistical measure of the range of an investment’s performance. When a mutual fund has a high standard deviation, its means its range of performance is wide, implying greater volatility.
Tracking error: Tracking error is the difference between a portfolio's returns and the benchmark or index it was meant to mimic or beat. Tracking error is sometimes called active risk.
Yield to Maturity: The Yield to Maturity or the YTM is the rate of return anticipated on a bond if held until maturity. YTM is expressed as an annual rate. The YTM factors in the bond’s current market price, par value, coupon interest rate and time to maturity.
