Wrong Doing.

The loss of an express package whichcontained »M)0 caused James Joseph Grebleso much worry thut he committed suicidethis morning by shooting hltnsetf In thehead. He was employed as money clerk bythe United 8tates Express Company andlived at 821 M street northwest, where theact was committed this morning. Formore than eighteen years Mr. Greble hadbeen in the company's employ and was con¬sidered one of Its most trusted employes. Not the slightest suspicion attached to himIn connection with the loss of the moneypackage and the company made good theloss without calling upon him for th«amount the package had contained. Tliiadid not seem to have satlslied Mr Grebleand he could not help worrying over theIncident. He had searched high and lowin his efforts to trace the missing package, but without being successful. This morn¬ing he trose at the usual tline and wasabout the house with his wife and twogrown children who lived at the familyhome. The presence of a laudanum bottlenot In Its usual place excited some sus¬picion. and. It Is thought. Mr. Greble prob¬ably drank some of the poison before heused the pistol He wrote a brief note ofexplanation, possibly last night, and ad¬dressed It to his wife. Shortly after 8o'clock this morning Mr Greble complainedto his wife that he did not feel well."Suppose 1 make you a cup of teaT" thawife suggested. "Perhaps the warm teawill make you feel better."The husband assented, and Mrs. Grebleleft the sleeping apartment to go to thekitchen. She had hardly reached thekitchen when she was attracted to thesleeping room by the report of a pistol. Fol¬lowing the report she heard the noise madeby the falling of Mr. Ureble's body. Wponentering the room In which she left herhusband only two or three minutes beforeshe was horrified at the sight of his deadbody on the floor. The son and daughterwere also there in a short time Assistance

The detective reported the case to thesecond precinct police station, and CoronerNevltt visited the house later In the day.Ho concluded from the appearance of thingsIn the room that Mr. Grehlo had stood be¬fore the mirror when he tired the shot. Thebullet had entered the right temple aftergoing through the hat. and had passed en¬tirely through the head. It was found Im¬bedded in the wall. So far as the coronerwas able to ascertain. Mr. Greble had saidnothing to his wife or children to give theman idea that he contemplated taking hislife. His act. therefore, came as a surprise tohis wife and children. It was reported to¬day. however, that he had said early thlamorning that he was tired of living, andthat he dreaded getting old.In the letter written by Mr. Greble to hiswife he referred to the missing package.,and said he was unable to make so largean amount good. His life Insurance, he ex¬plained. would more than reimburse the

company The letter also contained enoughto show that the loss of the package couldnot possibly have been prevented by him.but nothing was said to reflect upon auy-body else in connection with the loss.Officials of the express company went tothe M street house to extend their sym¬pathy to the members of the family. Mr.Greble. as already stated, had been em¬ployed by the company for about eighteen

years, and was, held in high esteem byeverybody with whom he had worked. Notone of them ever thought for a momentthat Mr. Greble knew anything about theloss of the money.
