The basic purpose of reading and writing is to obtain and

provide information.

Information can be provided in a variety of writing formats, including•Nonfiction books and textbooks•Magazines, journals, and newspapers •Dictionaries, thesauruses, encyclopedias.•Government pamphlets and other public documents.•Instructional manuals.

Examples of text.Poetry is writing that

uses Literary elements, such as rhyme, to present ideas or experiences to the reader.

Poetry is usually broken up into short stanzas, or lines of verse that create a unit, like a paragraph.

There are many reasons authors write. They may wish to tell an entertaining story or to provide the reader with information. Perhaps they want to persuade the reader to accept their view point on some topic or they want to teach the reader how to do something. When reading a passage, try to determine why the author wrote it. This can help you understand the passage better.
