We asked our advisees:
Surprises? If I only knew. . .Advice for new students
College is not a trade school. Wish I had been more open to exploring different courses.
I wish I knew sooner about department pages with profiles of professors and courses. Pages make it easier to research classes.
Class is not optional—don’t get caught up in the
social atmosphere.
Lots of free time – use it wisely.
Library tour! including good places to study and where the outlets are located
You need to be on your toes all the time.
I loved my Freshman Fellow—lots of people don’t realize you can just go ask her.

“…finding things about her life was definitely very easy. […] I had a lot of trouble coming up with a thesis statement that, I guess I didn’t really understand. […] But at the time, I was just, I have all this research, how am I supposed to just come up with something that’s arguable, when all of it is right in front of me?”

Who cites whom? How to trace scholarly “conversations” using the Web of Science?
Example: Who cites Malcolm R. Parks, “Making Friends in Cyberspace,” Journal of Communication 46 (1) (1996): 80-94?
WRT 105: Growing up Asian American Topic:
Key terms:
Resources: Voyager Catalog, MLA,ProQuest Research, Google, America History & Life
Questions to answer:1. What are you finding? Are those all scholarly sources?2. What is the best way to search this resource?3. When you find something that looks good, how do you find “more like this”?4. How do you get the text in your hand?
What did we gain?
Broader perspective of student learning experience
Better understanding of the curriculum and current faculty interests
Better alignment with student and faculty needs
Fruitful collaboration with other academic units
What did our students gain?
integrated learning = better results
“…being an academic librarian means
being three things: collaborator; educator;
relationship builder. […] It all hinges on
being integrated into the teaching and
learning process on your campus.”
