New Mission Statement Adopted
February 2016
The United Way helps people by uniting resources and programs to
meet the needs of our community. With this mission in mind, I
considered it a privilege to lead the 2015-2016 campaign. Thanks to the
steadfast support of many organizations, volunteers and contributors,
the United Way of Cleveland County raised $1,504,795. These funds will
be used to meet critical needs through the 30 programs contained
within 25 health and human service organizations located here in our
community.
Cleveland County has a tremendous heart of giving. It is one of the
reasons I am proud to call it my home. As campaign chair, I had the
chance to see this “heart of giving” in action while visiting our leading
industries, businesses, and non-profits. I especially want to thank the
campaign volunteers that do such a great job of communicating the
needs and sharing their passion for meeting those needs within their respective organizations. Their
effectiveness is reflected in the fact that our United
Way’s per capita giving levels in key campaign segments
remain among the highest in the country.
By the time this Annual Report goes to press, plans will
be well underway for the 2016-2017 Campaign, under
the leadership of Campaign Chairman Elect, Ed Faylo.
Please help us continue to spread the word about the
work of United Way serving youth, families, and
emergency needs and how every contribution is valued
and beneficial.

A word from the Chairman... The committees and chairpersons did an excellent
job this year and I would like to thank them for their hard work. Our local
economy has shown little growth and again
this year’s committee members had to
search for ways to stay in the lines of the
budget. They were challenged to keep an
open mind to all areas of how the
community would be impacted by any and
all reduction to an organization. Although,
this caused a great challenge for the
committees they did their groundwork and
went to work under the leadership of
knowledgeable chairpersons. It was a
wonderful experience for me to watch
community leaders at work serving their
community with love and commitment.
Again it was a growth experience for me to
serve alongside such well-informed leaders of our community. After the panels
had done their job a report was made to the Executive Committee for review.
They discussed all distributions and sent the work to the full Board for approval.
Once the Board had discussed the Fund Distribution recommendation a motion
was made to accept.

This past year was the second year of service for the 211 Help Hotline in Cleveland County. 2-1-1 is a simple, three-digit telephone number that connects people with important
community services to meet everyday needs and the immediate needs of people in crisis. Below are some stats
about callers from the second year of 211 service.
NORTH CAROLINA 211 HOTLINE
For the second year the United Way of Cleveland County officially
partnered with the community event Connect, Commit to Change.
This annual event seeks to meet the needs of area health and
human service agencies by connecting volunteers with agencies face
to face. Here is what Connect, Commit
to Change founder and United Way
Board Member Dr. Collette Deviney had to say about the event. “The
Connect, Commit to Change Program brings together agencies that help
people with people who need help throughout the year. Connect,
Commit to Change is a partnership with the Star and the community.
The event becoming a United Way Program has helped to maximize
community outreach.” The United Way is proud to be a part of the
Connect, Commit to Change program and thanks Dr. Collette Deviney for
her leadership and commitment to the United Way and our community!
