Hace mucho tiempo, la Gallina y el Águilaeran amigos. Vivían en paz con todas lasotras aves. Ninguna de ellas podía volar.

Once upon a time, Hen and Eagle werefriends. They lived in peace with all theother birds. None of them could fly.

Un día, la hambruna llegó y el Águila tuvoque caminar muy lejos en búsqueda decomida. Regresó muy cansada. “¡Tieneque haber una forma más fácil de viajar!”dijo el Águila.

One day, there was famine in the land.Eagle had to walk very far to find food.She came back very tired. “There must bean easier way to travel!” said Eagle.

Luego de un sueño reparador, la Gallinatuvo una idea brillante. Empezó a recogerlas plumas que sus amigas aves soltaban.“Cosamos las plumas por encima de lasnuestras”, dijo. “Quizás así sea más fácilviajar.”

After a good night’s sleep, Hen had abrilliant idea. She began collecting thefallen feathers from all their bird friends.“Let’s sew them together on top of ourown feathers,” she said. “Perhaps that willmake it easier to travel.”

El Águila era la única que tenía una agujaen la aldea, así que ella empezó a coserprimero. Se hizo un par de alas muy lindasy voló mucho más alto que la Gallina. LaGallina se consiguió la aguja paraempezar a coser sus alas, pero se cansóantes de terminarlas. Dejó la agujaencima del armario y se fue a prepararalgo de comida para sus hijos.

Eagle was the only one in the village witha needle, so she started sewing first. Shemade herself a pair of beautiful wings andflew high above Hen. Hen borrowed theneedle but she soon got tired of sewing.She left the needle on the cupboard andwent into the kitchen to prepare food forher children.

Pero las otras aves habían visto al Águilairse volando lejos, así que le pidieron a laGallina que les prestara la aguja parahacerse alas también. Y pronto, el cieloestaba cubierto de muchas aves volando.

But the other birds had seen Eagle flyingaway. They asked Hen to lend them theneedle to make wings for themselves too.Soon there were birds flying all over thesky.

When the last bird returned the borrowedneedle, Hen was not there. So her childrentook the needle and started playing withit. When they got tired of the game, theyleft the needle in the sand.

Más tarde, el Águila volvió. Pidió la agujapara coser algunas plumas que se lehabían caído durante su viaje. La Gallinafue a buscarla en el armario y no estaba.Buscó en la cocina y en el patio, pero laaguja no aparecía. No estaba en ningúnlugar.

Later that afternoon, Eagle returned. Sheasked for the needle to fix some feathersthat had loosened on her journey. Henlooked on the cupboard. She looked in thekitchen. She looked in the yard. But theneedle was nowhere to be found.

“Sólo dame un día para encontrar laaguja,” la Gallina le rogó al Águila. “Paraque puedas arreglar tus alas y volar enbúsqueda de comida.” “Un solo día,” dijoel Águila. “Si no encuentras la aguja en undía, tendrás que regalarme uno de tuspollitos como pago.”

“Just give me a day,” Hen begged Eagle.“Then you can fix your wing and fly awayto get food again.” “Just one more day,”said Eagle. “If you can’t find the needle,you’ll have to give me one of your chicksas payment.”

Cuando el Águila regresó al día siguiente,vio que la Gallina estaba arañando latierra, pero la aguja no estaba. Así que elÁguila voló muy rápido hacia dóndeestaban los pollitos, agarró a uno de ellosy se lo llevó lejos. Después de eso, elÁguila siempre encontraba a la Gallinaarañando la tierra con sus patas paraencontrar la aguja.

When Eagle came the next day, she foundHen scratching in the sand, but no needle.So Eagle flew down very fast and caughtone of the chicks. She carried it away.Forever after that, whenever Eagleappears, she finds Hen scratching in thesand for the needle.

Y cuando aparece la sombra de las alasdel Águila en la tierra, la Gallina les ordenaa sus pollitos: “Aléjense del suelo seco ydescubierto.” Y ellos le contestan: “Nosomos tontos, saldremos corriendo.”

As the shadow of Eagle’s wing falls on theground, Hen warns her chicks. “Get out ofthe bare and dry land.” And they respond:“We are not fools. We will run.”
