THE CHRISTMAS spirit isalive and well in the TopEnd, with a record-breakingnumber of gifts being do-nated to families in needthis year.

St Vincent de Paul volun-teer Martha Swart saidgenerous Territorians haddonated about 800 Christmasgifts to the local charity.

The presents will go tothose who can’t affordto buy their children Christ-mas presents.

‘‘That’s more than we’veever had before,’’ Ms Swartsaid. She said 99 per cent ofgifts were brand new andincluded two bicycles,10 skateboards, four fishingrods and a radio.

‘‘All were great quality,’’Ms Swart said.

‘‘There were some lovelypresents for older girls likemovie vouchers.

‘‘Most presents, as usual,were for boys and girlsaged between two andeight years old. There weresome beautiful toys, trucks,

little and big, cars, puzzlesand books.’’

Ms Swart said the mostvaluable item was ‘‘prob-ably one of the bikes’’ and adesigner leather handbag.

All of the presents willbe delivered before Christ-mas to families identified bySt Vincent de Paul as beingin need.

‘‘We give them presentsunwrapped but also providewrapping paper and tape sothe parents can look at thegifts before preparing themfor their children,’’ MsSwart said.

‘‘Every child likes FatherChristmas to give him orher a present at Christmasand our aim is to facilitatethat. It’s sad when parentshaven’t got money for it, sowe try to help them out.’’

Ms Swart said StVincent’s volunteers alsoput together 450 food ham-pers over a week to donateto the families, containing‘‘mainly Christmas fare’’.

Twenty-five hampers weredonated; St Vincent boughtthe rest from Food Bank.

BALINESE orphans will begiven a helping hand thisChristmas by way of somenew clothes and school-ing material.

Lynne Merrall will travelto Denpasar in Bali to visitthe Jodie O’Shea Orphanageon Boxing Day, where shewill help bring happiness to

nearly 70 children. ‘‘We’resending over about 50 kilosworth of clothes and thenpencils and textas they canuse,’’ she said.

‘‘They have absolutelynothing, and we hope it’s asmall way to help.’’

Ms Merrall is already plan-ning future visits dependingon what the children, be-tween two and 10, need.

She discovered theirplight through Facebookwhere AFL identity ShaneCrawford had written ofthe orphanage.

The Bogarts Bar and Grillmanager has support fromowner Geoff Annear andgeneral manager MarkMcLaughlin, and the threehope to gather more donat-ions in 2014.

‘‘We’ve done lots of fund-raising before with charitieslike Variety,’’ Mr McLaugh-lin said.

‘‘This can be just the startin building a relationship,’’Mr Annear said.
