St Vincent de Paul volun- teer Martha Swart said generous Territorians had donated about 800 Christmas gifts to the local charity. The presents will go to those who can’t afford to buy their children Christ- mas presents. ‘‘That’s more than we’ve ever had before,’’ Ms Swart said. She said 99 per cent of gifts were brand new and included two bicycles, 10 skateboards, four fishing rods and a radio. ‘‘All were great quality,’’ Ms Swart said. ‘‘There were some lovely presents for older girls like movie vouchers. ‘‘Most presents, as usual, were for boys and girls aged between two and eight years old. There were some beautiful toys, trucks, little and big, cars, puzzles and books.’’ Ms Swart said the most valuable item was ‘‘prob- ably one of the bikes’’ and a designer leather handbag. All of the presents will be delivered before Christ- mas to families identified by St Vincent de Paul as being in need. ‘‘We give them presents unwrapped but also provide wrapping paper and tape so the parents can look at the gifts before preparing them for their children,’’ Ms Swart said. ‘‘Every child likes Father Christmas to give him or her a present at Christmas and our aim is to facilitate that. It’s sad when parents haven’t got money for it, so we try to help them out.’’ Ms Swart said St Vincent’s volunteers also put together 450 food ham- pers over a week to donate to the families, containing ‘‘mainly Christmas fare’’. Twenty-five hampers were donated; St Vincent bought the rest from Food Bank.
