EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
19 December 20175
P R E P A R E D N E S S P L A N N I N G G R O U P S I N M S U
Emergency Preparedness - an ongoing process to
prevent, mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover
from an Incident that threatens life, property,
operations, or the environment
The Planning Cycle - A dynamic process of activity
aimed at establishing and maintaining preparedness
i.e. assessment, planning and preparation, response,
continuity, recovery, mitigation and prevention. This
planning cycle was introduced and integrated into the
business process of all departments in the
Hospital/Healthcare Facilities.
Major Incident definition - “an incident which
overwhelms or threatens to overwhelm the resources
of the healthcare facility due to its nature, type,
location, severity or number of casualties involved.”

CLINICAL DECONTAMINATION
Clinical Decontamination is the process where
contaminated persons are treated individually by
trained healthcare professionals using purpose
designed decontamination equipment. This is full wet
decontamination using Clinical Decontamination Units.
During Clinical decontamination, medical intervention is
provided throughout i.e. life threatening conditions are
managed simultaneously.

Provide a safe & comfortable working environment
Clinical decontamination in a temperature controlled &
air flow controlled environment.
Durable & Robust
Simplicity, does not need special skills to operate and
can be operated with the fewest number of workers
Facilitate easy access for patients who are on trolley,
wheelchair or being carried.
Self-sufficiency – power, water, drainage for a good
period of time, without external supplies.
Provide privacy & dignity for patients, respecting the
local cultural norms.
