▸ It’s great that you’ve achieved so much, but it’s not so great when no one knows about it.

▸ You don’t have to share any of your personal thoughts in regards to your achievements, your public diary is just about the straight facts of what you’re achieved.

▸ I’m not talking about boasting and saying how great you are… I’m just talking about simply keeping a public diary of your achievements. If you spoke at a big industry conference, great… put it on the list, and if you won some type of industry award, put that on the list as well.

IT’S GREAT THAT YOU’VE ACHIEVED SO MUCH, BUT IT’S NOT SO GREAT WHEN NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT IT.

▸ The reason you want to keep a constant running public diary of your achievements is because when companies are looking for people to speak on particular industry topics, they’ll be able to find you and ask you to speak… thus giving you the opportunity to have even more achievements.

▸ Yes, LinkedIn can do a fairly decent job of keeping all your achievement in one place, but I always recommend that you keep your public diary on land that you own i.e. a website domain that you own vs. rented land i.e. social networks such as LinkedIn.

▸ Don’t get me wrong here… if LinkedIn is easiest for you, then by all means, do it… but if you’re serious about taking your career, and the achievements that go along with it, to the next level, you’re going to need to start to build up an ‘electronic press kit’ for yourself, and you’re going to want that to be on your own land.

▸ Although you may think you’re going to be at your current job forever, the chances are… you’re not… this is one of the reasons why it’s so important to keep a public diary of your achievements. Everything may be going great for you and then one day you walk in and find that your company was bought and that your job is being made redundant, what do you do then… well, if you’ve been keeping a public diary of your achievements, you’d naturally be able to jump into other opportunities right away because you’re prepared.

▸ Look at keeping a public diary of your achievements as a way of always having an up to date resume ready to go at anytime. It’s not that you plan on using it i.e. the oxygen mask when you fly on a plane, but just in case of emergency, you’ll want to have it ready.

▸ Think about it for a few minutes and it will all start to make sense to you.
