HND in Fine Art(Level 5) [ Apply ]
The HND in Fine Art provides the opportunity for those students who have completed a HNC to progress to a higher level
course and continue their studies at the college. The ethos of the course is to focus upon an individual's conceptual and
creativity identity and to develop them within the context of the course units relative to their particular artistic concerns
and interests. Focus for the course comes through negotiating a creative and developmental response through regular
tutorials and studio practice. I held it imperative to evolve an instrument of thought which would aid in cutting through all
cultural opiates, past and present, so that a direct, immediate, and truly free vision could be achieved, and an idea be
revealed with clarity. Clyfford Still. Download Student Funding for HNC / HND courses as a pdf document (58KB)

How to DrawDrawing is an essential skill that underpins all of our artistic and creative endeavours. Drawing allows us to be expressive
and descriptive, to explore and to communicate. We offer a range of drawing classes that will allow you to investigate
drawing practice with guidance and support. Our drawing courses are grounded in established practice but embrace
innovation and experimentation.
Life drawing and painting classes give learners the opportunity to study and work from the human figure and explore
different mediums, materials and techniques. Drawing from the figure can inspire many different forms of artistic inquiry;
from an exploration of identity to an understanding of human physicality. Observation, composition, measuring and
expression are key elements and poses are also given an historical reference and context.
Measured Drawing classes will teach students measuring systems and will concentrate on the process of drawing rather
than the subject. Different systems of drawing clearly and simply laid out will be explored over the weeks.
Art materials are not included in the course fee but basic materials can be purchased from the college at reasonable
prices. Any extra costs will be indicated in the course outline or at interview and advice sessions. (Please note that during
life classes a nude model is used.)
How To Draw From the Model: Developmental[ Enrol ]
Students will develop their existing drawing skills by working from long or short poses, using male and female models.
Students are encouraged to establish an analytical context for contemporary life drawing needs and practice whilst
refining their understanding of the formal qualities of; line, tone, perspective, form, space, anatomy, scale and
composition. Suitable for learners at all levels.

Printmaking - Open Workshop[ Enrol ]
This short course is a practical, studio based programme that will give you a good introduction to etching. You will work in
our light and well-equipped specialist studio and learn with supportive tutoring. Etching is an intaglio technique. A drawing
is made through a layer of wax, referred to as a hard ground or soft ground. The plate is put into acid and the wax acts as
a resist as the zinc plate is "bitten" in the exposed metal. The plate is covered with ink and then wiped clean. The ink left
in the recesses makes the print when paper is pressed into them on the etching press. The course is a combination of
structured teaching and informal workshop time. Please refer to the Fact Sheet for further information.

Understanding ArtAlongside Art practice there is an abundance of information and theory. There are probably as many interpretations and
explanations of Art, its practice and its manifest objects as there are artists. Under this heading we hope to offer a range
of courses that will provide insight and understanding for those who wish to explore the contexts in which Art evolves, is
made and exhibited.
Guided visits to contemporary exhibitions will aim to provide an expanded view of what the curator of today considers
viable as marketable artefact or ground breaking conceptualisation.
Lectures and seminars, often associated with exhibitions, will give an opportunity for direct interaction with artists talking
about their artwork, its development and presentation.
Outside practice courses and workshops will explore Art History and Theory through associated practical activity beyond
the studio in museums or the high street.
The information and theory explored under the heading of Understanding Art will support study in our other subject
discipline areas of Sculpture, Photography and Printmaking. Learning how to paint and draw, studies in watercolour or
even digital photography will all benefit from having some contextual background to support your practical
experimentation.
