SHRM Assurance of Learning® Assessment

• What employers should know about it

• Why employers should care about it

28

What does passing the exam show an employer?• You can be confident a recent graduate who passes

this test is adequately prepared to practice HR at the entry level

• Know that your entry level candidates know how to apply what they learned The exam includes 30% scenario-based questions to test a

student’s ability to apply knowledge Difficulty measures show that the test is difficult but fair Differentiation measures show the test items appropriately

differentiate between those students who know HR and those who do not

29

What SHRM needs from Employers

• Awareness! – Now you know, spread the word! To your fellow Chapter and State Council members To your colleagues To your network via social media

• Discuss it with students & your students chapters (especially College Relations Directors!)

• Consider offering a full or partial exam scholarship for qualified students of affiliated student chapters

• Look for it! Recruit for it! Include it as a “preferred” qualification for entry level positions

What HR standards are being created?

Today there are several active standards workgroups in each of 3 areas; 2 standards have been published and 7 additional standards

projects are actively under development. All taskforces are accepting participants.

Competencies and You!

• In 2013 SHRM will continue to advance concepts and methods that are important to the profession

• HR Competencies Model: In 2012 we launched a Competency Model and demonstration

version of the Competency Self-Assessment Competency Model being exposed through chapter speeches,

seminars and eventually a published book Objective is to link proficiency in the Model with overall improved

individual and organizational performance Several products/services are under development: competency-

based self-assessment for launch this summer and a suite of tools for a later launch: 180°feedback, 360° feedback, and an organizational-level assessment
