IMPORTANT The following is for information purposes only and serves to inform applicants of the possible components to be included in a portfolio submission. Portfolio requirements are subject to change from year to year. Do not submit any portfolio materials unless specifically instructed to do so, after applying to the program. Once you have applied to this program, specific portfolio instructions and submission details will be provided to you in your Sheridan Student Account.
Program Eligibility and Selection Process for Applicants
Eligible applicants will be selected on the combination of the following:
• postsecondary diploma or degree and/or• demonstrated work and life experience
and
• a letter of intent• a résumé
Postsecondary transcripts, indicating courses completed to date, must be submitted at the time of
application. Preference will be given to candidates with postsecondary credits in journalism and/or
social science. Applicants selected for the program will be notified by mail and their Sheridan email
account. Classes for the fall term begin Tuesday, September 8, 2020.
Instructions for Applicants
After applying to the program, applicants will be required to submit a letter of intent and résumé online and will receive submission instructions.
a) LETTER OF INTENT: The letter of intent should be a well-written, persuasive, and
grammatically correct one-page PDF document. It must argue why you believe you are a good
candidate for the Journalism – New Media program and how the program will serve your
future goals. It must also briefly state how you regularly consume news and the sources you
rely upon, explaining which is your current favourite online news source.
The following are important facts to include in the letter (in list form, if you have multiple
examples):
I. College or university courses you have taken that are relevant to journalism
and media.
II. Outside courses or workshops you have attended that are relevant to
journalism and media.

IV. Volunteer work you have done in journalism or media.
V. Other jobs and the names of your employers.
VI. Other volunteer work you have done.
VII. Experiences you have had that demonstrate teamwork.
VIII. Personal hobbies and interests.
IX. Any awards you have received.
X. Your favourite online news source and explain why.
XI. State how you regularly consume news and the mediums you use. (onesentence)
