On Tuesday 30 March, our College community gathered
in the Guilford Young Theatre for the annual Claremont
College Awards Evening. This evening was a chance to
recognise and celebrate the hard work and dedication of
both past and present students.
Our college operates on four important values, these
being Aspiration, Courage, Growth and Respect. These
are values that we expect everyone in our community to
uphold, and all our awards recipients demonstrated these
values to a high degree.
A highlight of the evening was the fantastic keynote
speech from accomplished performer and tutor, Naarah
Barnes. Naarah spoke about the support and guidance she
received from staff at Claremont College throughout
Years 11 and 12. She also spoke passionately about finding
the right pathway, and how important it is to continually
work hard and chase your dreams.
Other highlights were the musical performances from the
Claremont College Wonderband and Van Diemen’s Band,
featuring past and present Claremont College students.
This showcased the excellent skills our Performing Arts
department are consistently developing in our students.
It was an exciting opportunity for our community to come
together and celebrate the achievements of our hard-
working students. It was also important to recognise the
dedication of our amazing staff, who work tirelessly every
day to support the learning and growth of our students.
We congratulate all award recipients. They
will always be a part of the Claremont
College community and we wish them the
best for an exciting future.

TERM 2 REPORTS.
Claremont College teachers are
currently writing the Term 2 student
reports.
These reports will give parents and
students an indication of student progress, participation
and attendance so far in 2021 and are an important factor
in student success. The reports also give students a focus
for the remainder of the year, and will be available for
collection at the Term 2 Parent Teacher Evening.
Parent Teacher discussions will be held at Claremont
College on the afternoon of 25 May from 3.30pm-7.00pm.
Come and collect your student’s report and chat to
subject teachers about your student’s
progress.

CLAREMONT COLLEGE HEALTH AND WELLBEING EXPO
At the end of Term 1 Claremont College hosted a Health and Wellbeing
Expo organised by our Student Services team. The Expo was held within
Home Group and lunch break, providing the opportunity for all students to
attend. The Health and Wellbeing Expo consisted of 17 different stalls from a
wide range of Tasmanian youth, health and wellbeing services and
organisations. There were stalls held by external services inclusive of Pulse,
Headspace, Centrelink, Eat Well Tasmania, Oral Health Tasmania, Family
Planning Tasmania, Skin Cancer Tas, Bucaan Community House and Flinders
Island Aboriginal Association Tacking Smoking Program.
There were also stalls organised and run by
Claremont College staff including Jo from
UniHub, Social Worker Duff promoting
healthy sleeping habits, Brent advertising the
Claremont College Enrichment Program, Anna
advertising First Aid courses and Hobart
College School Health Nurse Lyndell tackling
drug and alcohol usage.
There were interactive activities for students
that included giant Jenga and drumming. The Health
and Wellbeing Expo saw a fantastic level of
participation from students who were engaged in
collecting information, resources and participating in
interactive activities. Claremont College would like to say a big thank you to all staff,
students and service providers for a great Health and Wellbeing Expo.

NEXT STEP TERM 1 EXCURSION
Next Step students went on an excursion on the MONA ferry to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG),
and Salamanca. The students and teachers got into the spirit of the holiday weather.
We started the day by taking the MONA ferry from Berriedale to Hobart. Our group took a short walk to TMAG,
enjoying a look around an indigenous display and a new exhibition, followed by morning tea in the sunshine.
In Salamanca Square we divided into smaller groups to complete maths activities about measurement and mapping.
After some lunch we strolled up to a big park, it was a great day out.
“I loved singing and dancing on the boat with Lachie and I filmed us
sailing on the river.” Tanika
“I loved going on the boats and seeing the museum.” Jacob

CLAREMONT COLLEGE CAREERS EXPO
The Claremont College Careers Expo kicks off on 4 May and we have a large range
of industry, employment and educational representation.
Students will have the opportunity to investigate and continue career conversations
with a vast range of industry specialists to gain valuable information to assist with
decision making during 2021.
Not only will students be able to talk to industry representatives, they will also have
the opportunity to investigate further education and training pathways through
TasTAFE, the University of Tasmania and Foundry as well as employment strategy
options with MEGT and Work & Training and many more.
The Library will host our education
providers (UTAS and TasTAFE)
while the Student Common Room
will be hosting representatives from
industry, employment, group training
and more. Students looking at what Drysdale has to offer will be able
to speak with Drysdale representatives in the new Drysdale Centre
of Excellence building which has recently been completed.
Students are encouraged to speak to a wide range of representatives
to assist in gaining valuable information which will help with future
career planning.
For more information leading up to the expo, please see Paul in
the Careers Centre.
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
This term we are very lucky to have Tom O’Hern as an Artist in
Residence here at Claremont College. The Artist in Residence
program is funded through Arts Tasmania and supports
Tasmanian artists to undertake residencies in schools across
Tasmania. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to work
alongside a practicing artist, and to see them creating their own
artworks and talk to them about their work.
Tom lives and works in Hobart, and since completing his Bachelor
of Fine Arts (Honors) at the Tasmanian School of Art in 2006, he
has had many solo and group exhibitions. Tom has also created a
number of murals, with his work brightening up the streets of
Hobart, most notably in Mathers Lane and Bidencopes Lane.
Tom’s pictures are filled with strange beasts, freaks and monsters. They could be from a billion years in the past or a
billion years in the future. Feral hand fish, robot vacuum cleaners gone loose, volcanoes, two headed emus and giant
insects – I wonder what we’ll see emerge from the art rooms.
Tom will be with us for approximately six weeks and will be developing some works for an exhibition as well as
creating a wonderful new mural for the exterior of the Art Block. We welcome Tom to Claremont College and look
forward to watching the progression of his work over the coming weeks.

2021- REASONABLE ADJUSTMENTS FOR EXAMS
Claremont College and TASC recognise that some students may not be able to access or participate in TASC
accredited courses on the same basis as other students without access to reasonable adjustments. This may be
because of a physical disability, a medical condition or a learning disorder. Adjustments can be made to exam
conditions to assist students who require this.
Students who believe they need to apply for reasonable adjustments for exams should:
• Firstly discuss this with their Level 3 or 4 subject teacher – they can give you more information and direct you
to the website for further information.
• Contact B block to schedule an appointment with Alana (school psychologist) if they need assistance
completing the application.
• The application needs to be completed no later than Monday 17th May to allow for the applications to be
processed and submitted.
Applications are now open and will close at the end of May. Application forms and the Reasonable Adjustments Policy
document are available on the TASC website www.tasc.tas.gov.au (Students > Years 11 & 12 > Preparing for Exams).
Year 12 or 13 Students who were approved for TASC Reasonable Adjustments in 2020 will be contacted to advise
whether they have been automatically reapproved for 2021, or if a separate Reapplication Form is required.
ASSOCIATION INTRODUCTION
The purpose of the Claremont College Association is to enable the College community and staff to work in
partnership to provide the best possible education and college life for students. It is also an ideal avenue to allow
interaction with the College at all levels as well as an opportunity to meet the wider College community.
Parents, College staff and community members together form the College Association. As a parent/guardian at
Claremont College, you are automatically a member of the College Association. All parents are encouraged and
welcome to attend Claremont College Association meetings, usually held once per term.
AGM NOTICE
The College Association Annual General Meeting will be held on 4 May 2021 at 4:30 pm. All are welcome to attend
either in person or through a zoom meeting appointment (video conference software).
Should you have an interest in nominating for a position on the committee, please contact the College Office on
6849 6868.
