INDEX TO THE BLUE MOUNTAIN COLLEGE ARCHIVES
BLUE MOUNTAIN, MISSISSIPPI
(Revised, December 2019, TDC)
Origin of the Archives
Blue Mountain College, established in 1873, has a rich tradition and history, and has contributed tremendously to the educational and cultural development of students in rural northeastern Mississippi. Founded as a college for women, it has transitioned into a modern co-educational liberal arts institution with a Christian mission statement. In 2002, with an interest in the preservation of the college’s rich heritage and history, the National Alumnae Association of the college commissioned Thomas D. Cockrell, Ph. D., Chair of the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at BMC (1992-2007) who had served previously as University Archivist at Louisiana State University in Shreveport, to create the archives of the association. Dr. Cockrell served as Archivist until 2006 and returned in 2018 to upgrade the general collection.
Extensive loss of historical records and statistical data resulted from damage by two major fires and even a probable tornado on campus in the early years making the task of creating the Archives formidable, challenging and rewarding. The May Gardner Black Alumnae Room in the Administration Building was the point of origin since historians of the Alumnae Association had collected a considerable volume of papers, documents, photographs, and memorabilia. After a diligent search on and around campus including basements, attics, and closets in the Sumrall house, the Guyton house, Stevens Dormitory, Guyton Library, Whitfield Dormitory, and the Lowrey Administration Building, a considerable storehouse of material emerged. The first order of business was to clean and sort followed by preliminary conservation and preservation and slowly the Collection evolved into a properly documented and orderly archival repository.
The Collection consists of several individual collections or series in reference to the type and origin of the documents themselves: Alumnae/Alumni Association, College, Graduates, Individual Collections, Institutional, Lowrey Family, Personnel, and Presidential. In addition the Archives are comprised of vertical file information on various topics. Books, catalogs, yearbooks, student handbooks, literary publications, student and employee directories, scrapbooks, and record albums may be found on the archival shelves. The inclusive dates of the Collection range from 1817 to the present.
Special recognition of the efforts of Alumnae Association historians Mary Dean Hollis (Class of 1950) from 1976 to 2004 and her predecessors need to be acknowledged, particularly May White Gardner Black (Class of 1904) who served as historian from 1939 to 1976. Without their dedication to collection and organization, this project would have been very nearly impossible. In the years after 2007 considerable credit is due to Librarians Sherry Dixon, Sue Ann Ethridge Owens (Class of 1990), and Silvia Ball Thompson (Class of 1973) who continued preservation efforts until Derrick Cash became Director of Library Services in 2011. Dr. Cash oversaw the

digitization of a portion of the Collection and itemization of considerable correspondence in the archives until 2018. Also a special appreciation has to be extended to the many people who have contributed to the collection in different ways through the decades preceding formal organization and to those who quietly donated items of interest without any recognition.
Renovations in the Lowrey Administration Building in July 2009 facilitated the move of the entire Archives to the Guyton Library. Future changes at the institution resulted in the Alumnae/Alumni Association relinquishing control of the archives to the college in February 2010 at which time the name changed from the Archives of the National Alumnae Association of Blue Mountain College to The Archives of Blue Mountain College.
