WHY?

• Why are you doing it– Propaganda– Influence opinion– Influence attitude– Influence behaviour– Are you after information

WHO?

• Who are you trying to reach– Can you reach them directly– Can you reach them via existing channels– Do the cluster in space or time, or media– Do you need to set bait

What

• Is it information rich (or info seeking)• Is it phenomenological• Is it affective

Where

• Are you located IN CONTEXT– Are people coming to your location because

you are there? or– Are you there because people are going to be

there?

When

• Is the time right for the message• Are you going to be competing for attention• Can you reach them while they are trapped.• Is your message/success influenced by what

they have just seen, or will see• Is your message adding to other messages,

working against other influences, or getting lost in the noise.

General tips

• Your passion is less important than their interest – “beware the zealot”.

• People are very literal• Never underestimate the power of mis-

directed people in large numbers• Don’t over-estimate the power of flashing

lights

Become an observer of behaviour

• Predation• Parasitism• Symbiosis• Commensalism• Putting the milk at the back of the

supermarket• Putting chocolates/magazines next to

checkouts
