Instagram is a social media tool with a focus on images accompanied by up to 360 words (kind of like this).

The brain processes images far more rapidly than text; in other words, we understand messages through images faster than through text. Instagram is a way to effectively and quickly communicate the FAU Libraries story.

To post to Instagram, install the Instagram app onto a mobile device (including tablets).

Available at no cost through Google Play and other app stores.

Once the Instagram app is downloaded, pictures taken by a mobile device can be posted to an account.

Here is a sample post from the Libraries’ Social Media Summit. I used my cellphone to take this picture of my co-workers at my presentation (thank you for being social media guinea pigs), and then added brief content and related hashtags before posting it.

This post received 4 “likes” within the first minute it was posted and then 19 by the next day!

What does the FAU Libraries post?Anything that tells who we are and

what we do!

The Libraries’ Instagram page can communicate official events and visits, such as this one.

Student images are very popular and generate many “likes.” One of our most liked posts was of students standing outside of a study room.

Also, note the embedded hashtags throughout the content; this allows readers to explore similar images and pages on Instagram.

Instagram can provide up-to-the-minute posts on library events, such as this visit to the Jaffe Center for Book Arts.

Instagram can be used to promote the Libraries’ activities and resources (as well as our people).

In this example, janeien16 (Kol the Therapy Dog’s caregiver) reposted this (see the bottom left corner).
