YOUNG people who become super-star celebrities in the blink of aneye because of their skills in theirfields of play should learn thatfame does not last forever and one
can just as quickly go from hero to zero.
Members of the boxing fraternity in NelsonMandela Bay were saddened to experiencethis closer to home after the death of formerSouth African Junior bantamweight champi-on Nkosana Vaaltein who died last week athis New Brighton home in Port Elizabeth, af-ter a long illness. He was 37 years old. He diedon Saturday, May 4 at the RDP home of hisgrievingmother Julia Skweyiya-Vaaltein (60)who was looking after him while he was sick.Because Vaaltein has not made any provi-sion for his funeral he might have to re-ceive a pauper’s burial if hismoth-er does not receive financialsupport to bury him.
Former boxers whomeet at his home to-morrow (Thursday)have agreed to pay R100each to assist with the funer-al arrangements. But this willsurely not be enough. A good Sa-maritan must come to assist thisgrieving family.
Vaaltein started boxing in 1988in Dimbaza and turned profes-sional in Port Elizabeth in 1993.His 12-year career spanned 32fights, 17 wins (3 KOs), 9 loss-es and 6 draws.
He was trained byLindile Shushwana withwhom he won the nation-al title against DavidVinger at Graceland Ca-sino, in Secunda Mpu-malanga on 22 Novem-ber 1998. FormerSABan-tamweight championPhindile Gaika alsotrained Vaaltein early onin his career.
Vaaltein, whose star was shining brightlyat this stage, left his home in Port Elizabethin 2000 to box in East London. In 2003 hemoved to Gauteng to fight under the tutelageof decorated trainers Mzimasi Mnguni andformer world champion Dingaan “The Roseof Soweto” Thobela respectively.
“He was a boxer since he was a child, butboxing has done nothing for us as a family,”said Julia. According to Julia, when Vaalteinwon the SA title he went to live in a flat intown before moving to East London and Gau-teng.
Boxing South Africa (BSA) Regional Man-ager Mthunzi Mapitiza said, “I do not knowwhat happened to Vaaltein. He left Port Eliza-beth while still at his prime in boxing and Inever saw him again.
“I only knew that he was in Gau-teng but when he came back homeinDecember (2012) hewas lookingvery sick and without money.”Julia said that as he was her
child she had to take care of him.She said that she tried in vain to
have her son included in herinsurance policy.
“A nursing sister at theclinic he attended regu-larly formedication ad-vised just recentlythat I register him fora social grant withSouth African Social
Security Agency (SAS-SA), and we were told to
wait for three months, butthis was too late,” sobbed Ju-lia.Julia is not financially able
to pay for his burial this Satur-day 18 May.

The Police have issued a warning to shop-pers to be on the lookout for criminals whooperate at shopping centres.
According to police spokesperson, Capt.Stanley Jarvis, many cases have been re-ported to the Mount Road and Humewoodpolice stations where criminals mislead thepublic with false information about dis-count prices. Incidents have been reportedfrom shoppers in the North End and Centralareas.
According to the modus operandi, fivewomen between the ages of 35 and 48 yearsapproach prospective clients at the en-trance of these shopping centres and tellthem they (the criminals) have a good rela-tionship with either the owner or manager
of a certain shop and they can organise dis-count prices for whatever they want to buy.
They then tell them they are not allowedto go into the shopwith anymetal-like itemssuch as jewellery, handbags and cellphones, because themetal detectors at the doors willgo off as soon as they walk in. They ask theclients to leave their belongings with them. While the shoppers are busy in the shopthey disappear.
The incidents mainly take place between8am and 9am, 1pm and 2pm and 4pm and5pm.
The police are asking the public that ifthey see any of these criminals or have beentargeted to please contact WO Louis Meyer-ing on 0 041 504 5000.

ECkarategrading inKwaDwesi, SaturdayPROFESSIONAL boxing governing bodyBoxing SouthAfrica (BSA) has issued a sternwarning for boxers to renew their licencesfor the 2013/2014 financial year before 31May.
According to BSA Director of OperationsLoyiso Mtya this is a final notice after BSAopened the licensing window from January2013 to March 2013 to enable licensees an op-portunity to commence with all necessarycompliances for registration and renewal oftheir licences.Mtya said a communique to this effect, wassent out to boxers, trainers, managers, pro-moters, ring officials andmedical practition-
ers in December 2012.“It has, however, come to our attentionthat, to this day, some of the current champi-ons and contenders have not licensed for theyear under review,” said Mtya.Failure to register before the said date willresult in champions losing their status andthe titles becoming vacant whereas contend-ers will automatically lose their top ten rat-ing positions.Mtya urged the affected boxers to consultprovincial managers to complete all neces-sary compliances and pay the licensing de-posits to BSA if they still want to be recog-nised as professional boxers in this financialyear. – NCEBA DLADLA
