ABOUT FIGURE

➤ Figure is a small but powerful music-making app ➤ Create beats with drums, bass and lead synth in minutes

➤ It’s free! ➤ Introduced in April 2012 ➤ Won awards

➤ Apple App of the Year, Sweden ➤ Apple App of the Year runner up, USA ➤ App Hall of Fame (Essen@als)

➤ Millions of downloads

THE PROBLEM TO SOLVE

➤ Killer app but with a 2.5 star review average ➤ Started out at 4.7 as a $1 app but started to decline in 2015

when it went free ➤ Most users are more inclined to review when unhappy

➤ We received recurring one-star reviews due to unfulfilled feature requests

➤ Average ra@ng reset with every minor new version ➤ Counteracted by buyer’s bias (but only for paid apps)

➤ Review form used as feedback channel, with no way for us to respond

A LITTLE RATING IS A LOT TO ASK

1. Get prompted by app

2. Switch to app store app

3. Wait for app page to load

4. Tap ”reviews”

5. Authen@cate (TouchID not supported)

6. Tap ”write review”

7. Enter ra@ng

8. Write textual review (if so desired)

9. Submit

EXISTING STRATEGIES

➤ Modal - confron@ng ➤ Licle user control ➤ Always in the way except exactly at the right moment ➤ Annoying

➤ Message in pop-up bar ➤ Easy to overlook and ignore ➤ Clucers UI

➤ 3rd-party libraries

GETTING HAPPY USERS

➤ Catch them when… ➤ Happy using the app ➤ In a general good mood

➤ Don’t disturb when… ➤ Listening ➤ Crea@ng ➤ Performing

➤ Offer a reminder – but avoid “not now” cycles ➤ User may be busy aher all

SOLUTION: THE TRINKET!

➤ A star is born! ➤ Presented aher a number of key ac@ons within a @meframe

by the user ➤ Open app / Save song / etc…

➤ Does not block the UI ➤ Animated to call for acen@on ➤ Non-intrusive enough that it can remain onscreen and not

feel in the way ➤ Feels like an opportunity rather than an obliga@on ➤ Tapping the star presents modal dialog to guide user to submit

review

RESULT

➤ App Store average ra@ng 4.7 ➤ Posi@ve reviews have increased AND nega@ve reviews have

decreased! ➤ We get ques@ons and nega@ve feedback that we can respond

to. ➤ Users get really happy when we do!

GOTCHAS AND TIPS

➤ Make the users curious ➤ Alert without disturbing but s@ll make it visible

➤ We don't want anyone to dismiss it just to get it out of sight ➤ Let the users ini@ate the feedback procedure

➤ Means they are not busy! ➤ Design ques@on: What’s the right amount of asser@veness in

promp@ng for feedback?
