THE CITY OF THE FUTURE

As envisioned by me in response to question L:

How do you envision the city of the future?

THE CITY OF TODAYLet’s first understand the city of today

The City of Today

■ Poverty

■ Illiteracy

■ Lack of infrastructure

The City of Today■ Conflict

The City of Today■ Stress

The City of Today

■ Excess population and traffic

■ Pollution

■ Heavy consumption of resources

THE CITY OF THE FUTURE

Introducing my Three Sphere Plan – plan that affects three spheres of life

■ Sections of the Three Sphere Plan –

– Technological Changes

– Systemic and Organizational Changes

– Sociological Changes

SECTION 1Technological Changes

The City of the Future■ Digitization of all paper

documents

■ Improved coordination of task assignment and communication in an organization using new software.

The City of the Future■ Offices built in or near residential areas

The City of the Future■ Workers of different

professions and different organizations sharing the same work space.

■ Workers are connected to their respective organizations electronically and not by virtue of a common workspace.

The City of the Future■ Benefits include-

a) People work closer to home and can spend more time with family.b) People do not have to travel far to work every day thus improving

work-life balance and reducing pollution, traffic and resource consumption.

■ Note: Only meetings which absolutely require personal presence are done normally. The rest is done electronically. Spending just two more days closer to home can make a big impact on family life.

The City of the Future

■ Common professions affected – cashiers, office clerks, online customer service representatives, secretaries and administrative assistants.

■ Professions with poor work-life balance that are affected – lawyers, managers, journalists.

■ Note: Journalists can use drones to gather news so as to spend more time near home.

The City of the Future

■ Additionally, new technology is developed keeping eco-friendliness in mind.

SECTION 2Systemic and Organizational

Changes

The City of the Future■ Education and empowerment of

girls and women to reduce poverty.

■ More people working in the family can increase family income.

■ Educating women can grant them independence and help control the population even.

The City of the Future

■ Education leads to better population control which in turn reduces poverty and resource consumption.

The City of the Future■ Introduction of all-woman organizations and

businesses to remove the “glass ceiling”.■ Great talent can be acquired for such

organizations as women facing the “glass ceiling” issue would flock to such companies.

■ Success of such organizations can bring faith in female executives and improve the culture in mixed gender companies as well.

SECTION 3 Sociological Changes

The City of the Future

■ Ethnic harmony between races, nationalities etc. Beneficial to reduce conflict.

The City of the Future■ Separation of morals, politics and law from religion.

Laws and Morals Religion

Laws are rules set by an institution to govern behaviour and conduct. They are often based on morals but can also be for purely administrative purposes.

Religion is a system of beliefs, often regarding the truths of the nature of the universe or ‘God’.

Laws and rules are applied to develop cohesion among a group of people for the purpose of daily subsistence.

Religion is used for an individual’s personal understanding and sense of fulfilment. Atheism and modern science can be considered under this.

e.g. Laws against murder, trade laws etc. e.g. Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism etc.

The City of the Future

■ Personalization of religion. Reduces conflict by removing forced impositions of religious norms.

■ People can choose what to believe in from the wide variety of ideas and symbols available in the various religions. They need not be divided into factions based on their beliefs.

To Summarize

■ In the city of the future, technology is developed for the problems the world really needs to deal with such as global warming and working life stress.

■ In the city of the future, systems, plans and organizations are changed to develop the world’s most underutilized resource-women.

■ In the city of the future, religion and science and clubbed together in a world of free thinking where neither one is used to undermine the other.
