Student Learning Goals Reflections– Part 3Brendan OBrien, Gail Stanley and Libby Delbridge
Purpose of these Sessions
These online professional learning sessions will:
Build a community of teacher/learners beyond your school
Provide a framework for effective PLTs
Develop an effective process for Student Goal Setting
Provide confidence and skills in using Ultranet
The Learning Intention for today is......
How do my students maintain their interest to reflect on their learning goals and begin the goal-setting cycle again building up a toolbox of strategies for student choice.
The Success Criteria will include........
1.I will be able to explain how students can reflect on their learning goals and be able to access them 24/72.I will learn how to incorporate Web 2.0 tools and how they can support students to build up a toolbox of reflective tools for student choice3. I will be able to understand how a PLT can effectively use reflective strategies incorporating Web 2.0 tools and have them available to students, teachers and parents
In Episode 5 …•We explained how to support students to reflect on their learning goals•We learnt how to model reflecting on goals •We came to understand how a PLT can effectively plan to support students to reflect on their goals
In Episode 4…•We explained why SMART learning goals should be reflected on•We learnt how to enable my students to reflect on their SMART goals in the Ultranet •We came to understand how a PLT can effectively plan student goal setting and reflection
Where are we from?
• Technological change in education means we are facing the largest transformation in how our students receive, interact with and respond to the learning experience that the teaching profession has ever seen. These changes mean that schools and early childhood settings are now broader than the walls of a classroom. Teachers, students and parents are increasingly using digital technologies to teach, learn and communicate, challenging the traditional concept of a school.
• The world of digital learning beckons, with opportunities for teachers and students alike to benefit from the opportunities and capabilities a digital world offers.

Living in a Digital Age
Why use Web 2.0 Tools to support students create and reflect on their learning goals?
Key Points:
•Placing the control in the learner’s hands.
•Encouraging them to be a part of their own learning and making them responsible for finding the necessary content.
•Digital learning is about connections, not about isolated learning.
The emerging learning styles include:
1.Fluency in multiple media and in simulation based virtual settings
2. Communal learning involving diverse, tacit, situated learning, with knowledge distributed across a community and a context as well as within an individual
3. A balance among experiential learning, guided mentoring, and collective reflection
4. Expression through nonlinear association webs of representations
5. Co-design of learning experiences personalized to individual needs and preferences
Web 2.0 Tools as they relate to Bloom's Taxonomy
Digital Story-Telling
• Web 2.0 and other technology tools are making it quicker and easier than ever to create digital portfolios of student work—a method of showcasing student progress that experts say increases student engagement; promotes a continuing conversation about learning between teachers, parents, and students; and extends academic lessons beyond school walls.
• In the context of reflection, learners create a 2-4 minute digital video clip that is told in first person narrative, in their own voice, illustrated by (mostly) still images/video footage, with the addition of a music sound track to add emotional tone.
Wall Wisher / Tagxedo
http://www.wallwisher.com/
•an online notice board maker where students can record Learning Goals and/or post their reflections.
•Students can also use it as their EXIT Slip at the end of class where they can write down three new things they learned. Or questions/concerns they still have. This gives students time to reflect on what they've learned and gives a Teacher ideas on what to cover better next time.
http://www.tagxedo.com/
•turns words -- famous speeches, news articles, slogans and themes, into a visually stunning word cloud, words individually sized appropriately to highlight the frequencies of occurrence within the body of text.•word clouds in real-time•customize font, theme, colour, orientation, and shape•save images for printing / use in videos•constrain the word cloud to selected shapes (heart, star, animals, etc)•use images as custom shapes (e.g. a portrait, an animal silhouette)•URL can be copied and pasted in an iFrame to view in the Ultranet
Photo sharing and VideosPhoto sharing and Videoshttp://animoto.com/
AnimotoAnimoto is a video production website that allows students to upload pictures, select music, and easily produce a short 30 second movie.•It's hard to assess student learning in a 30 second project, but using this tool to replace a paragraph or as an intro to a reflection or a portfolio piece gets students interested.
• Photo sharing sites add a visual component to your students reflections.
• Have your students take a picture of themselves and upload it with a welcome message.
• Have them turn the photos into a slide show with text and/or narration/music.
• Create your own videos or have your students create and share videos
Glogster / WixGlogster / Wix
http://edu.glogster.com/www.wix.com
•For reflection of a Learning Goal have students use these tools to reflect on what they learned. Their digital poster can include key points of learning, reflections supported with images, a favourite learning activity, the part of the Learning Goal that was most difficult for them, etc.
• Glogster lets you create interactive posters and Wix an interactive website incorporating pictures, music, moving images and videos.
• It is using a multi-modal approach.• Students can create multimedia
online posters/“glogs” or websites which can then be shared on the Ultranet using the embed code and placed in a Wiki or Publication Display.
• These tools can be used to assess both writing and speaking.
Voice Thread
http://voicethread.com
Allows users to create multimedia for an authentic purpose - learning goals can be in the centre and reflections added as conversations.
• Can be especially helpful at increasing student engagement and motivation while activating learning.
• VoiceThread, an interactive, multimedia slide show tool, enables users to hold conversations
around images, documents, and videos.
• Its interface and feature set are well-suited for promoting student engagement and motivation as well as for helping students develop as independent learners.
• To create an individual VoiceThread, users can upload any combination of images, documents (e.g., from Word, Acrobat [PDF], Excel, or PowerPoint), and video clips to arrange these elements into a slide show.
Podcasting / AudacityAudacity – eduSTAR image in audio/Video tab•easy-to-use and multilingual audio editor and recorder for Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux and other operating systems.
You can use Audacity to:•Record live audio.•Convert tapes and records into digital recordings or CDs.•Edit MP3, WAV or AIFF sound files.•Cut, copy, splice or mix sounds together.•Change the speed or pitch of a recording
• Podcasting is the process of creating an audio show of some sort available in MP3 format via an RSS 2.0 feed that supports enclosures. Podcasts are designed to include talk shows, tutorials, music, or other audio content.
Podcasting can be used for:• Story - Story telling for children or the
visually-impaired.• Students can record their voice in
Audacity and save as an mp3. This can then be used to replace music in any import function in any video-making application eg/ Animoto
