How do I……place a hold on a book?

What is a “hold”?When you wish to sign out a book that is

on the shelfOR

checked out to someone else,you can place a hold on it.

If the book is on the shelf:o The Library staff will retrieve the book and

hold it for you. o This is called an “on-shelf hold”.

If the book is checked out:o It will be recalled and held for you.

To place a hold, go to www.eclibrary.ca

Click on Catalogue

Enter the title of the book you want.

The Item Information Record will tell you if a book is on the shelf or checked out.

Click on one of the Place Hold links.

A login screen will appear.

Enter your login information (see next slide) and choose where you would like to pick up the item.

User User ID PIN

Students & Alumni of Canadore College or Nipissing University

The number on your Canadore or Nipissing identification card

Your date of birth in MMDDYY format

Faculty & Staff of Canadore College or Nipissing University

The number on yourstaff card

Ask at the Circulation Desk for your PIN, or call 705-474-3450 ext. 4222

PALS & Community Members The number on your Library card Ask at the Circulation Desk for your PIN, or call 705-474-3450 ext. 4222

Distance Education Students & Faculty

Please email distance@eclibrary.ca, or call 1-800-655-5154 (choose Library) if you would like a hold placed on a book.

Select an expiration date for the hold (a date after which you no longer need the book).

This tells you that the hold was placed successfully.

On-Shelf Holdso Please note that on-shelf holds are retrieved at

specific times during the day, so the book you want may not be retrieved immediately after you place a hold.

o If another patron picks up the book in the meantime, they may sign it out and the book will not be held for you until it is returned.

When the book becomes available…

o You will be notified, usually by phone.o The book will be held for you for 3 days

at the Circulation Desk.

You can also check your Library account to see if your hold is available:

o From www.eclibrary.ca, click on Catalogueo Click on My Accounto Select Review My Accounto Log in and click on Display User Information.

When the details of your Library account appear, click on Holds.

More About Holds:o More than one person can place a hold on

a book, so you will receive it based on the order holds were placed.

o A book cannot be renewed once a hold has been placed on it.

Holds cannot be placed on:o Short-Loan or Reserve Books.o Non-circulating items such as Archive

materials and Reference books.

You cannot place a hold if:o Your account is blocked because of

overdue materials or outstanding fines.o You have already placed the maximum

allowable number of holds (7).

…then click on Cancel selected holds.

To cancel a hold, log in to your account, and select the hold(s) you wish to remove…

You will receive a confirmation message.
