The New Elisha Feeds Five Thousand Homily Summary Father Andrew Wojtan August 2, 2020
This is the most well-known miracle of Jesus’ public ministry because it’s the only miracle of Jesus that’s recorded in all four Gospels. This feeding is a kind of visible and external sign of Jesus’ invisible Divine power. It shows us that Jesus isn’t just a great preacher. He also has power over creation. Actually, it is not just five thousand men. Matthew tells us, not including women and children, so you can imagine a crowd of thousands of people. This is clearly a mira-cle of multiplication.
There are striking parallels with a famous miracle of multiplication from the OT that is tied to the prophet Elisha. Elijah and his successor Elisha are miracle workers in the OT. One of the mira-cles involves multiplying loaves of bread, so that a large number of people can eat (2 Kings 4:42-
44). Elisha takes twenty loaves and multiplies them for a hundred men. Jesus takes five loaves and multiplies them for five thousand men. In both cases, we have some leftover. Elisha has some, but it’s not specified exactly how much is left over. Jesus in the Gospel makes very clear that there are twelve baskets leftover from the fragments of the five loaves.
What do these parallels reveal to us? Jesus is a new and greater Elisha. Elisha multiplied twen-ty loaves and fed a hundred men. Jesus multiplied five loaves, but fed thousands of people. In the Gospel of Matthew there is the image of Jesus as the “greater than.” Jesus didn’t say it, but we could say, something greater than Elisha is here. In a Jewish context, this miracle would have been an extraordinary display of Jesus’ exceptional power over creation.
Isaiah 55 has a call from God to the people of Israel to come to His banquet of food and drink, which is free. He also makes clear that this isn’t an earthly food and drink. Why in the midst of this banquet, does God bring up David and the Covenant? When God enters into a Covenant with Israel, He enters into a sacred relationship with them. He becomes the Bridegroom, and they are the Bride.
One of the key signs of that Covenant, in the OT, is the Bread of the Presence. The Bread of the Presence, was a sacrifice, which was set out every week by the priests. It would be offered with a flagon of wine, so it consisted of both bread and wine. It’s fascinating that in this prophecy, there is a direct echo of the bread and wine as the Presence of God. The feeding of the five thousand points back to the OT, to the miracle of Elisha. It points back to the banquet that Isaiah talks about, where God will feed the multitudes.
This OT prophecies point also forward to the Last Supper. Because at the Last Supper, Jesus is going to identify His own Presence with His Body and His Blood. He will give the new Bread of the Presence and the new Wine of the New Covenant. Jesus will give food and drink which will actually satisfy, but not on a material level. Jesus will feed the souls of His disciples. In the Eu-charist above all, Jesus gives us the food that nourishes and satisfies for eternal life.
