Summon Searching

GOALI Basic Course

What Is Summon?

Summon is a Google-like search engine that provides fast,

relevancy-ranked results:

• Enter the search terms into a single search box or select

Advanced Search options from the results page.

• Refine (limit) results by criteria such as date, subject,

academic journals, and other options.

• View results and link directly to the full text or more details.

Access Summon from the “Databases” hyperlink.

Summon Access

Click on “Summon-Country” Specific Search.

For this example, click on Liberia.

Click the name of your

country to search for the

full text of Research4Life

content.

After clicking on the name of your country, you will see the Basic Search display of Summon as

shown here.

Summon notes that Research4Life is the client which means that there will be access to full-text

articles.

Basic Search

The search for constitutional lawyielded 216, 297 results.

Note the content type.

Remember, we are searching GOALI in Summon. Since this does not index all the GOALI journals, other titles may be

available from the GOALI portal.

Click on Full Text Online for the article entitled Unconstitutional

Conditions Questions Everywhere: The Implications of Exit and Sorting for Constitutional Law and Theory.

At the new page that has opened, click on “Article Full Text.”

Here is the homepage of the journal article.

the article is available.

Here is the PDF version of the journal article.

Options to get a permalink to the article, cite the article, email the article, save the article, and more exist.

Click on the “Permanent Link” icon

to access a permanent URL.

Click on the “Cite this item” icon

to choose your citation format.

Click on the “Email this item” icon

to choose your citation format.

After you click on the “Save this item” icon

the article will appear in your list of saved items.

Click on “Export To…” to see a list of reference managers to which

you can export your saved citations.

From the dropdown menu, you may choose the citation style for

your saved articles.

In the left column, numerous options to refine the search are

listed.

Refine (Limit) a Search

The green check mark next to “Journal Article” means that the search results are now limited to

journal articles. Limiting the search to journal articles yields 196,800

results.

Note additional filters for search results:

To reset your search, click on “New Search.”

Summon contains an Advanced Search option.

Note the various ways to make a search more precise.

Advanced Search

During your Summon search, you may encounter an article for which the full text is not available through

Summon.

The grayed out text indicates that the full text of the article is not

available.

The name of the journal is Review of Central and East European Law and

it is published by Brill.

From GOALI’s main content page, click on the Publisher tab.

Select Brill.

Select Review of Central and East European Law.

From the homepage of Review of Central and East European Law,

select volume 42, issue 4.

Click on the hyperlinked title of the article.

The full text of the article is available.
