PERSONAL INJURIES UPDATES IN 2018 2.5 CPD – GROUP STUDY POINTS
Speaker: Pamela Keegan BL
In addition to the pressure that has been put on the Irish Government in recent
years to finally legislate for catastrophic injury cases by way of periodic payments,
there has also been much media spotlight and criticism of the size of awards made
by the Irish Courts in personal injury actions over the last decade or so. On foot of
this, the Personal Injuries Commission was established in 2017 and its first report
issued in December 2017. During 2018, it has worked on establishing a high-level
benchmarking of international awards for personal injury claims against what
occurs in Ireland and the Commission will explore this and indeed
recommendations for the industry in its next paper, which is expected later this
year. Accordingly, this lecture will consider and discuss:
The Personal Injury Commission - it's reports and recommendations for the
transformation of the personal injury claims process in Ireland
New rules for insurers
Updates in Personal Injury case-law, including fraudulent claims
The Civil Liability (Amendment) Act 2017 - introducing periodic
payments legislation

UPDATES IN DATA PROTECTION LAW: GDPR & DATA PROTECTION ACT 2018
2.5 CPD – GROUP STUDY POINTS
Speaker: Pamela Keegan BL
2018 has seen the introduction of one of the most significant and far-reaching
pieces of legislation in decades; possibly ever. The General Data Protection
Regulation (GDPR) affects companies and organisations across the globe and gives
rights to all citizens of the European Union providing them with control over how
their personal data is used.
While the rules are universal across member states, there are quite a number of the
practical details that the GDPR assigned to each member state to address. The Irish
Government did this though the Data Protection Act 2018.
Accordingly, this lecture will consider:
The background and history of data protection
The Irish Data Protection Act 2018
Rights of data subjects
Responsibilities of processors and controllers
The legal basis for processing data
Offences and penalties
The Data Protection Commission
