Objective

• SWBAT name and identify points, collinear points, lines, line segments, planes, parallel lines, skew lines, and parallel planes.

Let’s start thinking!

• Draw a square.• Label the square ABCD• Can you identify anything about the square? (i.e. points,

lines)

• Now make that square into a cube. Can you identify any parallel lines?

• Look at this picture of the trolley on St. Charles Ave. Do you see any parallel lines, points of intersection?

Terms

• Point: a location; it has no size, is represented by a small dot and is named by a capital letter

• Lines: are series of points that extends in two opposite directions; they are named using any two points on the line & the order does not matter.

• Collinear points: Points that lie on the same line.

Terms

• Plane: – a flat surface that has no thickness. – Has many lines and extends without end in the directions

of all its lines. – named with a single capital letter or AT LEAST three of its

noncollinear points.

• Coplanar (points and lines): when points and lines lie in the same plane.

Terms

• Line segment: a part of a line consisting of two endpoints and all points between them

• Ray: the part of a line consisting of one endpoint and all the points of the line on one side of the endpoint

• Opposite rays: two collinear rays with the same endpoint; opposite rays always form a line.

More terms

• Parallel lines: coplanar lines that do not intersect

• Skew lines: noncoplanar, which means they are not parallel and do not intersect.

• Parallel planes: planes that do not intersect.

Postulates• Through any two points, there is exactly one line.

– i.e. Points can be collinear even if the line is not drawn in the figure.

• If 2 lines intersect, then they intersect in exactly one point.

• If 2 planes intersect, then they intersect in exactly one line.

• Through any 3 noncolinear points, there is exactly one plane.
