Garb 101Basics Garb For All

Class by: Antoinette of Thunder Guard

What is Garb? Garb is defined by the Book of War as “the clothing to be worn by

all participants of Belegarth.”

Minimum garb is defined by the BoW as

1.2.1 A tunic or tabard covering the torso.

1.2.1.1 Neutral coloured t-shirts, with no visible printing, or sports bras may be worn underneath a tunic or tabard.

1.2.1.2 Wearing nothing on the torso is acceptable for men.

1.2.2 Baggy pants or trousers covering the legs.

1.2.3 Skirts, Kilts, and Dresses are acceptable substitutes.

1.2.4 Footwear should be muted colors, boots are preferred, athletic shoes should be of a dark color and not unnatural. Barefoot or Sandals are acceptable.

Does not have to be expensive.

Garb is Not: T-shirts that are brightly colored, white, with visible logos,

with visible collars, and or visible pockets. Camouflage or military issued cargo pants. Modern jeans of any color. Modern hats. (Cowboy Hats, Baseball Caps, Cabby Hats,

Fedoras) Any fabrics with modern prints. (To some degree) Something to make us look stupid Something that is hard to do Something that has to cost you your first born child Something that is uncomfortable Something that makes you feel itchy

Why do we need Garb?

In order for Belegarth to maintain a certain level of believability we need to wear garb. We are Belegarth MEDIEVAL Combat and garb helps us to look and feel more Medieval than jeans and a tee-shirt do.

Garb is not something people made up to make you look stupid, or feel stupid. Good garb is just as or more comfortable than your mundane clothing. We are here to work with you to find a garb style that fits the medieval and high fantasy feel of the game and is comfortable for you.

Basic Garb is:

Basic garb is one step up from Minimum Garb.

It is a simple tunic with pants or a dress

It can be bought or made

It is easy to learn to do

It works with your persona if you are in to Role Play aspect of the game

Basic “Male” Garb Basic “Male” garb can be

A simple t-tunic A pair of nurses pants with side pockets removed

(Neutral coloured) Marshal Arts Pants A pair of shoes or boots of muted colour (black,

grey, brown) A kilt or war skirt Simple Baggy Drawstring pants

As a note this is not strictly male garb, ladies are free to dress HOWEVER they want…they don’t HAVE to wear only dresses or skirts in Belegarth.

Basic Female Garb• Basic Female Garb is:

– Peasant Skirt– Wrap Skirt– T-Tunic Dress– Simple Chemise Top– T-Tunics– Baggy Pants – Footwear that is muted in colour

Female fighting garb is more or less the same as male garb, ladies can and sometimes do wear skirts to fight in, these skirts are normally modified( silts cut or gores added) to allow for better movement

Basic Monster Garb I am NOT a Monster each race has different things that make them who they are

this is just an overview of what I have learned about monster garb

Pants are still baggy, often tattered with patches

Patches are common place, as is bad sewing, seams on the outside kind of thing

If you’re a Goblyn you want to have you elbow and knees covered

If you’re a hat troll you need a hat troll hat and coat

Ogre’s arms and sometimes torso are bare

Mech Goblyns are often found wearing goggles

Bugbears wear an arm covering over the arm their God Blessed

War braids are common in monsterdom

Body Paint (each race are different coloured)

Skirts are also often tattered, and multi-coloured

Layers are common

SHINY IS IMPORTANT!!!!!

“Found” Garb

Found Garb is something more or less Goodwill or Thrift store garb

It is things that can pass as garb but are actually modern/mundane pieces like simple peasant tops with embroidery on them, peasant skirts, and nurses pants

The Goodwill Tunic is part of what I consider “Found” Garb

The Goodwill Tunic

The Goodwill Tunic is a polo shirt, long or short sleeved, that has been turned into garb

It has had all its hems removed (sleeve and bottom)

It has had its collar and buttons removed

Put holes into the shirt where the buttons were and lace cord through them

You have a tunic that passes, its not amazing but it passes

Resources

The SCA is a great resource, find your local SCA group and talk to them about Arts and Sciences Nights. There will often be someone will to help teach you how to make garb

Simplicity Easy to Sew Pattern Line has many easy to sew pajama pant patterns that work well for pants

Ask around the Belegarth Boards on the Medieval Arts and Sciences Board, someone will answer you
