Featuring James Comer, Commissioner of Agriculture
Kentucky Department of Agriculture
In 2013, Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner James Comer made bringing back hemp farming to Kentucky
one of his top priorities. He put together a bi-partisan panel of experts including former CIA director Woolsey, Sen.
Paul, Rep. Massie, Rep. Yarmouth and North Dakota Rep. Monson to testify on behalf of his hemp bill, SB 50. Through
his leadership and determination, Comer managed to pass SB 50 despite strong opposition from the Kentucky State Police.
In 2014, Comer led the Kentucky Department of Agriculture
(KDA) to file a successful lawsuit, against the DEA to stop their attempts to block his implementation of the law and unlawful seizure
of imported industrial hemp seed. Since challenging the DEA, seven (7) states have joined Kentucky to cultivate industrial hemp by way
of state pilot programs allowed by the Farm Bill. The HIA as well as Vote Hemp are grateful for Commissioner Comer’s unwavering effort
to see industrial hemp reintroduced in Kentucky. We are honored to announce him as a keynote speaker at this year’s annual HIA conference!
