Indian sub-continent is among the worlds mostdisaster prone areas and is prone to a number ofnatural hazards.
One million houses are damaged annually in
natural disasters, in addition to loss of humanlives, social and other losses.
Introduction

3/28
India receives an annual average rainfall of 975 mm,75% of the same in 4 month period from June to
September Hilly areas are at risk from landslides & avalanches
About 60% landmass is prone to earthquakes ofmoderate to high intensity
Over 40 m ha (12% land mass) area is prone tofloods & river erosion
5700 km out of 7500 km coast line is prone to
cyclones & tsunamis

Primary: direct, measurable losses such aseconomic and social infrastructure.
Secondary: indirect losses incurred such aslower output from damaged assets; loss of
livelihood options.
Tertiary: flow losses/negative impacts due toshifts in the macro-economy to respond to the
disaster.

Life Safety Learning Centre
Centre where people can participate in live-cum-
virtual demonstration on disasters. Training can be done in the local language. Economics is one of the main drivers behind the
move to disaster event simulation.Training frequency can be increased through
simulation technology at a much lower cost thanconventional training.
Benefits: Societal: Disaster preparedness Educational: Can enhance teaching
