Development of research data services requires
staff training

• What have we done?
• What did we learn from it?

Autumn 2012 we started an education project in
Helsinki University Library 15 library staff members as students
+ 1 project coordinator
www.helsinki.fi/yliopisto
We had 10 workshops(3 h sessions)
Topics:• research data archives • data management plans• usage of registry data• data documentation and metadata• Liber: Ten recommendations for
libraries to get started with research data management
• etc.

We had visitors in workshops, such as...• Researchers telling about their research data
• Data models and metadata
• Usage of data and ethics
• Data archive providers
• Expert of persistent identification from national library.
• Expert of national health statistics and registries

We had assignments between workshops, like...• Find job advertisements for ”Data Librarian”.
Look up the requirements. What skills do you have already? What skills do you need to get?
• Find Data Management support websites made by libraries. Which are the main topics?
• Teach others in 10 minutes one important issue about research data management.
• Make a presentation about some research data archives in your subject field.

We had a research project...
• First we made a literature review about the topic.
• Then survey, interview study...
• Subject
• Researchers
• ICT services
• Other libraries’ librarians...
Everybody talked with a researcher about research data and data management.

How did we make the participants to get involved?
• An expectancy and target survey in the beginning
• We decided our learning goals together
• Workshops as interactive as possible
• We taught each other
• Survey at the middle of course: ”How has it been? Any improvement suggestions?”
• Etc

We made a plan for library research data management support and training services.
We will present our plans in a seminar 30th Aug 2013 to the library, university research services, ICT services, etc.

• This has been fun!
• No drop outs, vice versa
• Even though we didn’t know it first, library has a huge potential providing data management support and training.
What did we learn?
Do not try to think what library could do before you know more about research data management!

Thank you!
