Transcript of Endocrine glands

Endocrine glands

• An endocrine or ductless gland is one that produces an internal secretion or hormone, i.e., a secretion carried in the venous blood stream to influence the activities of another part of the body

Hypophysis (Pituitary gland)

• Pituitary gland is a small gland hanging by a stalk, the infundibulum. It is made up of two lobes, an anterior and a posterior, entirely different from one another functionally.

Suprarenal glands

There are two suprarenal glands. Each one caps the top of each kidney, but they are not functionally related.

Thyroid glandThyroid gland lies in front of the neck. The thyroid gland consists of 2 lobes and an isthmus.

Parathyroid gland

The parathyroid glands-two on each side; they lie on the back of the thyroid gland. They are 4 small ovoid bodies

PancreaseThe endocrine cells are small islets of cells that release the hormone insulin and glucagon into the blood stream

• Testes and OvariesThe gonads not only produce the spermatozoa and ova, which may be considered as exocrine function but they have an important endocrine function as well. Specialized cells release the male and female sex hormones
