BENEFITS OF AN INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCEFor students in sociology, an international experience can add deeperinsight to the discipline and their studies at UVA. Studying abroadexposes sociology students to new perspectives and ideas, allowingyou to be better equipped in research and applying theory. There are awide variety of opportunities available for coursework abroad insociology. Students can integrate a semester, year, or short-termprogram into their academic plan, earning both major credit or generalelective credit towards their UVA degree.

ACADEMIC & TIMING CONSIDERATIONSFor the major, the Sociology Department will allow up to six creditsearned abroad to transfer towards requirements. Students seekingapproval for major credit must meet with the Director ofUndergraduate Programs of Sociology on a case-by-case basis. Pleasenote that the courses which are considered for transfer cannot besubstituted for SOC 3020, 3120, or 4000 level courses.To ensure a well-integrated study abroad experience, the Sociology department and theInternational Studies Office recommends planning early in youracademic career. Students with a declared sociology minor may not use study abroadcredit for their minor requirements.
