Dutch Compound Verbs
Dutch Compound Verbs
In Dutch, there are many verbs that consist of a verb and another word. This other word can be an adverb:goed (well)goedkeurento approve
hard (hard, fast, tough)hardlopento jog, to run
zwart (black)zwartrijdento travel without a ticket
But most compound verbs consist of a verb and a preposition, e.g.aan(on, to, at),om(about, around, down, to),achter(behind, beyond),onder(under), etc. When combined with a verb, these prepositions are technically no longer prepositions. But we will refer to them as prepositional prefixes anyway.Separable and inseparable compound verbsAmong the compound verbs, we can distinguish between separable and inseparable compound verbs. The names speak for themselves: separable verbs can be split into a verb and a prefix (a preposition or adverb), inseparable verbs cannot.
Noun-verbs (inseparable)
Normally, the very fact that a verb is a compound verb (whether separable or inseparable) has consequences for the conjugation of the verb. The noun-verbs are an exception: They perfectly behave like simple verbs, as if they did not consist of two words at all:RangschikkenTo order, to arrange in a certain order: Rang= rank Schikken= to arrange, to suit#simple present#simple past
ikrangschikikrangschikte
jerangschiktjerangschikte
hijrangschikthijrangschikte
werangschikkenwerangschikten
jullierangschikkenjullierangschikten
zerangschikkenzerangschikten
Thepast participleis formed as if the verb were a simple verb:Let us takerangschikkenagain:We get thepast participleby "ge + stem + t/d"ge + rangschik + t =gerangschiktThe number of this type of verbs is quite limited:list of noun verbsNote that the examples above give you the unstressedpersonal pronouns. Some pronouns change when they are stressed in a phrase: je/jij, we/wij, ze/zij (both singular and plural).

Separable compound verbsBy far most compound verbs belong to this category. Rather than learning all separable compound verbs by heart, you better learn which verbs areinseparable.Where prefixes ofinseparable compound verbs are never separated from their verbs, separable compound verbs can occur in two pieces: In certain situations the prefix is separated from its verb.So when do we break up the verb and when do the elements remain attached to each other? In thesimple presentandsimple past, we separate the prefix from the verb:samenwerken (to cooperate)zij werkten samen (they cooperated) In thepast participle, the separable compound verb remains intact:*zij hebben samengewerkt (they have cooperated)(*)There are cases where even the past participle is split in two. See the chapter about word order and theprefix of a compound verb. The main difficulty lies in distinguishing separable from inseparable compound verbs. An important characteristic of the separable compound verb:the stress always lies on the adverbial prefixnot on the verbThis is a good way to distinguish this category from the category of inseparable compound verbs, where the stress lies on the verb. Good dictionaries indicate the position of the stress. See also:List of common separable compound verbs.VerbSimple presentPresent perfectTranslation

Waarnemenhij neemt waarhij heeft waargenomento perceive
Zwartrijdenhij rijdt zwarthij heeft zwartgeredento travel without a valid ticket
Inseparable compound verbsWhen a compound verb is inseparable, it means that it is regarded asone, indivisibleword. An important characteristic of inseparable verbs:inseparable verbs: the stress always lieson the verb not on the prefixThis is a good way to distinguish it from separable verbs, where the stress lies on the prefix.Formation of the present and simple past tenseIn the present and simple past, the inseparable compound verb is subject to the normal rules: it is not divided into its elements, like the separable compound verbs, so the adverbial prefix remains attached to its verb.Overleven (to survive):#simple present#simple past
ikoverleefikoverleefde
jeoverleeftjeoverleefde
hijoverleefthijoverleefde
weoverlevenweoverleefden
jullieoverlevenjullieoverleefden
zeoverlevenzeoverleefden
Formation of the past participleThe past participle also behaves a bit differently: instead of the regular (ge+stem+d/t), the prepositional or adverbial prefix replaces the prefix ge-, so we get:Adverbial prefix + stem + d/te.g. past participle: over+leef+d =overleefdRecall, that we recognize the inseparable verb by its stress: it is placed on the verb, not on the prefix.
Separable or inseparable? The clearest distinction between separable and inseparable verbs is the stress: separable verbs have stressedprefixes, while inseparable verbs have stressedverbs. Unfortunately, this way, you will have to consult a good dictionary to establish whether the verb is separable or inseparable.Apart from the stress, there are a few specific hints that can help you distinguishing between the two type of compound verbs.First of all, inseparable verbs can only take certain prefixes:Common prefixes for inseparable verbs:A few (but only a few!) inseparable verbs take:
Usually part of inseparable verbs:
mis(miss, wrong)vol(full)
Mostly used for separable verbs, yet also common for inseparable verbs:
om(around, over)onder(under)over(over)Generally used for separable verbs, but occasionally part of inseparable verbs:
aan(on, to)achter(behind, after)door(through, on)voor(for, before)weer(again, re-)
Verbs that begin with prefixes other than the ones mentioned above are always separable. E.g.tegen(against),op(on), oruit(out, off). However, note that separable verbs can also begin with the prefixes listed above. The challenge lies in determining wether a verb that begins with one of the prefixes listed above, is separable or inseparable. For each prefix in the table, there are a few guidelines to establish whether the verb it is connected to is separable or not. These are outlined on the next page.
More separable and inseparableThe compound verbs that can be both separable and inseparable begin with the prefixesmis, om, onder, over, vol, aan, achter, door, voor and weer(see also the previous page). Each prefix-verb combination has its own particular guideline for determining whether the verb is separable or inseparable. The guidelines are explained below.Mostly separable verbsMostly inseparable verbs
aan, achter, door, om, onder, over, voor, weermis, vol
Most of them are separable.
You can view theinseparable verbs here:list of inseparable verbs: ExceptionsMost of them areinseparable.
You can view the separable verbs here:list of separable mis and vol-verbs
MisAlmost all verbs that have the prefixmis(miss) are inseparable. For this reason, it makes sense to learn the separable mis-verbs by heart:SeeList of separable mis and vol-verbsSeparable mis and vol-verbsVerbSimple presentPresent perfectTranslation

Here, the meaning ofmisis 'wrong' or 'false', e.g.: misleiden (to deceive, 'to lead false') misdragen (to behave badly)There are also separable mis-verbs, but here, the meaning ofmisis literally miss, as in 'to miss a target', e.g.: misslaan (failing to hit the target) mislopen (to miss an opportunity, appointment, etc).VolBy far most compound verbs that begin with 'vol' (full) are inseparable. There are some separable vol-verbs, which you can find in thelist of separable vol-verbs.Here, 'vol' is used in the sense of 'complete' or 'finished', e.g.: volbrengen (to accomplish, to achieve) volstaan(to suffice, to be sufficient). There are, however, also a dozen or so separable vol-verbs. Separable verbs use 'vol' in a literal, physical sense, e.g.: volgieten (to 'pour full') volstoppen (to 'stuff full')OmMost om-verbs are separable. All om-verbs not mentioned in thelist of inseparable verbs: Exceptionsare separable.
Inseparable verbs list
In general, verbs that start withaan, achter, door, om, onder, over, voor, andweerareseparablecompound verbs. In the list below you will find the exceptions to this rule: They are allinseparable. As you can see, most exceptions areom, onderandoververbs.

The wordomhas several meanings (around, in order to, down, back).Inseparable om-verbs always useomin the sense of 'around'.OnderMost onder-verbs are separable. When 'onder' (under) is part of a separable verb, it means physically or literally 'under'. Examples are: onderdompelen (to drown, to immerse) onderduwen (to push something or someone down) ondersneeuwen (to cover in snow)In general, if the meaning of under is not physically under, the verb is inseparable. But the meaning of under as an inseparable prefix varies strongly: ondernemen (to undertake) onderschatten (to underestimate) onderwijzen (to teach).Onder-verbs not mentioned in thelist of inseparable verbs: Exceptionsare separable.OverThe distinction between separable and inseparable over-verbs is a bit difficult to establish. 'Over' can be used in many different ways. 'Over' in the sense of 'too' or 'excessive' is always part of an inseparable compound verb. Indicating some kind of movement (to walk over to), 'over' is usually a prefix of a separable compound verb.Over-verbs not mentioned in thelist of inseparable verbs: Exceptionsare separable.Aan, achter, door, voor, and weerGenerally, verbs that begin with 'aan' (on, at), 'achter' (behind), 'door' (on, through), 'voor' (for, before), and 'weer' (re-, again) are separable. There is a smalllist of inseparable verbs: Exceptions.
