El CAAM presenta la exposición ‘The Devil You Know’ del
artista irlandés Richard Mosse
La muestra de fotografías refleja su particular mirada sobre la guerra que azota a la República Democrática del Congo desde hace dos décadas
24/04/2014.- El Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno (CAAM) presenta en las salas de arte de San
Antonio Abad ‘The Devil You Know’ (El diablo que conoces), primera exposición individual del
artista irlandés Richard Mosse en un museo español. Esta muestra, comisariada por el crítico de
arte y escritor chileno residente en Nueva York, Christian Viveros-Fauné, se podrá visitar hasta
el 17 de agosto en este espacio expositivo, dependiente del área de Cultura, Patrimonio
Histórico y Museos del Cabildo de Gran Canaria, que coordina Larry Álvarez.
La exposición reúne una selección de obras de fotografía creadas entre 2010 y 2012 durante los
viajes realizados por Richard Mosse a la República Democrática del Congo (RDC), donde logró
infiltrarse, junto a dos de sus colaboradores, en grupos paramilitares armados que operan en
una zona afectada por el conflicto bélico que afecta a este país desde hace dos décadas.
Las fotografías de Mosse, varias de ellas elaboradas para representar el pabellón irlandés en la
55ª edición de la Bienal de Venecia, reflejan su búsqueda de estrategias para representar, con
imágenes aparentemente bellas, una de las tragedias africanas olvidadas, que ha provocado
hasta el momento más de cinco millones de muertes.
Usando material militar en desuso, la película infrarroja escogida por el artista expresa un
espectro invisible de luz, que convierte en color fucsia los verdes y marrones naturales de los
paisajes que capta, a modo de metáfora sobre un auténtico infierno. Son obras, de las series
‘Infra’ y ‘The Enclave’, que reflejan un verdadero sufrimiento humano desde una estética
sublime de la vida y a través de imágenes espectaculares de campos de guerra, militares
armados o niños-soldado. Actualmente, ese país del África central sigue inmerso, veinte años
después, en una situación de emergencia constante como consecuencia del clima de guerra
generado por grupos violentos, responsables de graves abusos contra la población civil.

Esta exposición forma parte del programa organizado por el CAAM con motivo de su 25º
aniversario, que incluye actividades y exposiciones de artistas de Europa, América y África,

atendiendo a la vocación atlántica y ‘tricontinental’ de este centro de arte. En este contexto, la
muestra de Richard Mosse representa la mirada de un artista europeo sobre un país africano y
supone además el prólogo de un diálogo que mantendrá con la obra del sudafricano Pieter
Hugo, que expondrá a partir de septiembre, también en las salas del CAAM-San Antonio Abad,
el proyecto ‘Este debe ser el lugar’, primera retrospectiva en España de este prestigioso
fotógrafo, especializado en retratos de comunidades tradicionales del continente vecino.
ARTISTA EMERGENTE
Richard Mosse (Irlanda, 1980) está considerado como uno de los más destacados artistas
emergentes europeos en el campo de la fotografía y el vídeo. Además del trabajo realizado en
la RDC, el artista ha producido obras en el contexto de otros conflictos bélicos, como el que
sacudió a la región de Los Balcanes en la década de los noventa, así como otras catástrofes
humanitarias, como la del terremoto de Irán a finales de 2003.
Sus obras están llenas de contenido y metáforas que ofrecen múltiples lecturas y demuestran
su preocupación estética, aunque muestran, sobre todo, su voluntad de ofrecer una mirada
personal sobre estos escenarios afectados por guerras cruentas, catástrofes naturales o
enfrentamientos sociales. Es un trabajo que pretende llamar la atención sobre lo que está
ocurriendo en determinadas zonas ‘calientes’ del planeta, ofreciendo una aparente belleza en
sus obras y siempre desde una mirada crítica y plural.
GALERÍAS
Para esta primera muestra personal de Mosse en un museo español, el CAAM ha contado con
el apoyo de las galerías Jack Shainman, de Nueva York, y Leyendecker, de Santa Cruz de
Tenerife.
CATÁLOGO
Con motivo de esta exposición, el CAAM edita un libro con textos de su director, Omar-Pascual
Castillo, y del comisario de la muestra, Christian Viveros-Fauné, que estará a disposición del
público en La Tienda CAAM y en la Biblioteca y Centro de Documentación del centro de arte.
