Even Friendly Fires Need Oxygen toIgnite…

The following article was originally intended tobe a fast paced review of the recent FriendlyFires gig at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel. And, sooneror later, this piece will head off in thatdirection… but before we get on to all that, Ithink I should give a mention to Radio One DJKissy Sell Out - the excellent jumping,bouncing, livewire DJ who played for an hour orso before Friendly Fires finally took to the Hotelstage.

Wednesday night was the first time I'd seenKissy Sell Out perform live and consequentlyhis high energy show took me a little bysurprise. His sound is, essentially, bass-linedriven electro, swiftly and sharply mixed. Butmore than anything else, the guy has a realstage presence, and throughout the entirety ofhis set, he worked hard to keep his followersfully entertained, chiefly by jumping aroundthe stage in an inner-city vest top, denimshorts and Reebok high-tops, always makingsure to accentuate his exaggerated DMC honedmixing style. All of which means nothing at all,unless you realise that by the end of his set,Kissy Sell Out had managed to fashion a kind ofelectro mosh pit in the lower courtyard of theIbiza Rocks Hotel… and for that unique feat, theman deserves a special mention and a hugeround of applause.At around 10pm, just after Señor Sell Out had

leapt from the big silver stage, a faint breezeblew across the courtyard of the Ibiza RocksHotel, which, in retrospect, is whollyunderstandable… because even Friendly Firesneed a decent waft of oxygen to properlyignite.

As the excitement continued to grow insidethe Hotel, the noise in the whitewashedcourtyard sunk, by degrees, to an agitatedhush; the branded Ibiza Rocks streamersfluttered on their high flagpoles, seeminglyenchanted by the slow passing zephyr… beforefinally the wind speed dropped to zero andFriendly Fires frontman, Ed Macfarlane,skipped onstage wearing a thin floral shirt,ankle grazers, and a pair of brown suede shoes,causing the entire Ibiza Rocks crowd to jump

up into the air like a giant slab of intoxicatedhuman meat fired from a wide barreled canon.The roar was deafening, but nevertheless,everyone knew the first track - Lovesick - whichsounded every bit as wholesome as the studioversion.I remember thinking: the Friendly Fires soundis terribly difficult to define in a single word;you need at least a paragraph to accuratelydescribe the angle of their oomph… I guess youmight say they bang out a lively fusion of pop,indie, and commercial dance grooves, filledwith blissful Balearic synthesised warps andechoes, plenty of euphoric, emotivebreakdowns, and poignantly pitched vocals,washing over a steady backdrop of rapidfour/four house paced percussive beats. Butwhat does all the aforementioned musicalflimflam actually mean? All most people wantto know is whether Friendly Fires are any good -are they a good band to listen to when you'reon holiday in Ibiza and looking for a fun nightout?

Those of us who were lucky to get inside theIbiza Rocks Hotel last Wednesday night alreadyknow the answer to that question - FriendlyFires one hell of a good band to watch live.Their chord structures might not be copious orridiculously complex, but their choruses aretruly epic. Their sound is ambitious, granderthan the Wombats, who played on the RocksHotel stage a few weeks earlier. And, onWednesday night, because of the sheer pace ofthe show, the two live percussionists weregiven a serious workout, and yet, neitherdrummer once dodged a beat or doublecrashed a maraca.Friendly Fires, you can tell, are terribly fond of

melodic shifts and dreamy electronic sounds,which, funnily enough, might have been theirdownfall, because it would have been very easyfor them to have swayed off-kilter andproduced a bucket load of cheesy, synthesizedpop music. But they haven't; they'vefashioned a decent sized back catalogue ofromantic dance music, all of which soundsthumping and edgy and not at all commercial.

Where exactly the Fires go from here isanyone's guess. Their production is improvingwith every album checkout if you don't

believe me and their live performances are asgood as any of the current dance/punkpacesetters. But whether or not their dreamydance sound is big enough to fill a stadiumsized venue is another matter entirely.Nevertheless, it's always worth rememberingthat most bands would kill for those kinds ofanxieties.

I hopped over to San Rafael last Tuesdayevening to see Annie Mac present her new

gig on the famed Amnesia Terrace. I'dnever been to Amnesia before, so we got to theclub early in order to take a look around.

Amnesia is not quite as vast as its local rival,Privilege - sited less than a mile down the roadbut it can still fill more than 5,000 hedonistsonto its two massive dancefloors, which areknown universally as the Terrace and the MainRoom.The Terrace is a long, flora encased dancehall,

bordered by a winding, high-rise balcony, onlyportions of which are accessible to normalticket holders. The dancefloor is beset by ascattering of boxed speaker stacks that areused as podiums as soon as the club clogs withclambering revelers. When life on the Terracegets too hot to handle, high mounted icecanons discharge gusts of cool haze down ontothe sticky skinned crowd, and every so often,racks of hanging lighting rods, which aresuspended from the ceiling on thick cable wirepulleys, drop down from above to add to thelavishness of the show.

The Main Room is much smaller, with a loftyhigh-rise DJ booth and buzzing electronicscreens that throb continuously withpulsations of multihued animation. But nomatter what room you find yourself in, bothsound-systems are as good as any in the worldand pack a serious punch.

The two dancehalls are over-bridged by anexpansive VIP balcony which spans almost theentire length of the club and is a riddle ofsmaller rooms and tight, secluded bars. Butthere weren't many ravers up on the high-verandas on Tuesday night; instead, the partywas all down on the ground floor, especiallyinside the Terrace Room, which Annie Maceagerly exploited with her pumpingcontemporary sound.But even before Annie Mac took to the stage,

the night was already in full swing. In fact, justas the clocks struck midnight, fast-risingnewcomer DJ Mak jumped aboard the Terracestage and began pumping out an educatedblitz of electronic bass-music sounds,including a few naughty hits from his ownridiculously sinful back-catalogue. Makscratched and tweaked and looped and workedswiftly to fill the massive Amnesia dancefloor,before, just after 1am, he passed the musicalbaton to Jack Beats - the creation ofMixologists DJ, Beni G, and Scratch Pervertsproducer, Plus One - who quickly hooked up aline of military specification laptops and beganunleashing a measured tidal wave of digitaldub-step and electronica that was readilyabsorbed by an unreasonably enthusiasticcrowd. And then, after an hour or so, AnnieMac skipped on stage, wearing a little blackdress and special DJ pumps, and we all rubbedour hands together and geared up for a seriousstomp…
