ADAM Reynolds and Greg In-glis have breathed new lifeinto South Sydney’s minorpremiership hopes with abrilliant second-half displayto help their side edge outManly 22-10 in a thrillingclash at Gosford.

Manly led 10-6 at half-timelast night and dominated the

opening 15 minutes of thesecond period, looking wellset for a seventh successivewin and their first over a top-four side this season.

But thanks to some bril-liant defending, including atry-saver from Inglis onDavid Williams and a SteveMatai effort that was ad-judged to have been held up,Souths somehow found a way

back into the game. And itwas in no small part down tothe efforts of man-of-the-match Reynolds.

Just shy of the hour markReynolds found touch from agoal-line dropout, then pro-duced a superbly weightedgrubber-kick to force a res-tart, and from the resultingset Nathan Merritt crossedfor his 150th NRL try.

That four-pointer well andtruly turned the game on itshead as Souths, after two suc-cessive defeats, rediscoveredthe form that’s kept them ontop of the ladder for much ofthe season to keep Manly peg-ged back in their own half.

Giant prop George Burgesswas kept out from closerange, as was Inglis, return-ing from a knee injury, but

the Manly defensive wallfinally collapsed in the 68thminute when the Queenslandsuperstar dived over to puthis side in front with Reyn-olds adding the extras.

That setback rocked GeoffToovey’s side and their incis-ive attacking earlier in thegame deserted them and And-rew Everingham iced the re-sult three minutes from time.

Roostersrun hurtsAnastaWESTS Tigers halfbackBraith Anasta admits itdoes hurt to see his formerclub Sydney Roosters flyinghigh in the NRL, but insiststhose feelings won’t play apart in Monday’s clash withthe ladder leaders.

Anasta, who left the Roos-ters at the end of last year, will face his old teammatesat Allianz Stadium for thefirst time this season.

While the tri-colours arerelishing their berth atopthe ladder with just four ga-mes remaining, the Tigersare languishing in second-last spot — having lost theirlast four fixtures.

‘‘It hurts a little bit, butit’s not something that I’vethought about,’’ Anasta saidof watching the Roosters’success. ‘‘You get so en-trenched in your own worldplaying at the Tigers.

‘‘I look at them and I’mhappy for the way they’redoing — they’re killing it.But it’s no surprise to me.

‘‘You look at the playingroster they had before theybought (James) Maloney,(Sonny Bill) Williams and(Michael) Jennings, and Ithought it was strong at thatstage. To add them three toit, and (Luke) O’Donnell, there’s no surprise to seehow good they’re going.’’

Monday night will see thelong-awaited return of vet-eran Lote Tuqiri, whohasn’t played an NRL gamesince breaking his arm inJuly last year.

‘‘I don’t know if I’ll maketoo much of a difference butI’m coming back and I’mreally excited to play backin the NRL,’’ he said.

BRISBANE showed last nightwhy they don’t need Ben Bar-ba as fullback — Josh Hoff-man inspired the Broncos toa 22-12 win over lowly Parra-matta at Suncorp Stadium.

Canterbury superstar Bar-ba is squarely in the Broncos’sights after he admitted yes-terday he had sought a re-lease from the final two yearsof his NRL contract in orderto be with his Queensland-based family.

But the Broncos are not ex-actly short on fullback fire-power with Hoffman starringin the four tries to two victoryover the spoon favourites thatextended their unbeaten runto four games and kept theirslim finals hopes alive.

The taste of defeat shouldbe familiar for Parramattabut the result was still a bit-ter one after they also losthero Jarryd Hayne (suspect-ed thigh injury) after comingoff second best when his 66thminute sideline scoringchance was snuffed out bythat man Hoffman.

Indeed Hoffman appearedeverywhere last night.

Time after time Hoffmanextinguished Eels raids buthis attacking flair also turnedheads — particularly in the28th minute.

Somehow the Kiwi inter-national beat four players ina rampaging 40m run tocrash over and blow the defi-cit out to 16-6 in the first half.

Still, Hoffman may be theodd man out if Brisbane com-plete their bold recruitmentplan for 2014 with not onlyBarba but Canberra No. 1 An-thony Milford also in theclub’s sights.

The 11th-placed Broncos

need to win their final fourgames just to stay in the topeight mix but would not havebeen taking anything forgranted despite lining upagainst the hapless Eels.

The dead last Eels knockedover Brisbane 19-18 in theirround nine clash this yearand thrashed the hosts 44-22the last time they met atSuncorp Stadium in 2012.

However, Brisbane ap-peared in control from theoutset with prop JoshMcGuire running off hookerAndrew McCullough to drawfirst blood in the 11th minute.

But Brisbane gave Hayneroom to move and the make-shift Eels pivot made thempay by capping a weavingrun by setting up centre RyanMorgan in the 18th minute tolock up the scores 6-6.

Winger Corey Oates (25thminute) and Hoffman crossedto make the half-time score16-6. Brisbane put the resultbeyond doubt when centreJack Reed (51st) crossed be-fore Reni Maitua (78th) reeledin the deficit.

Parramatta snapped a10-game losing run with a lastround win over Wests Tigersbut are still on course to be-come the first club sinceSouths in 2003-2004 to claimback-to-back wooden spoons.
