Manly led 10-6 at half-time last night and dominated the opening 15 minutes of the second period, looking well set for a seventh successive win and their first over a top- four side this season. But thanks to some bril- liant defending, including a try-saver from Inglis on David Williams and a Steve Matai effort that was ad- judged to have been held up, Souths somehow found a way back into the game. And it was in no small part down to the efforts of man-of-the- match Reynolds. Just shy of the hour mark Reynolds found touch from a goal-line dropout, then pro- duced a superbly weighted grubber-kick to force a res- tart, and from the resulting set Nathan Merritt crossed for his 150th NRL try. That four-pointer well and truly turned the game on its head as Souths, after two suc- cessive defeats, rediscovered the form that’s kept them on top of the ladder for much of the season to keep Manly peg- ged back in their own half. Giant prop George Burgess was kept out from close range, as was Inglis, return- ing from a knee injury, but the Manly defensive wall finally collapsed in the 68th minute when the Queensland superstar dived over to put his side in front with Reyn- olds adding the extras. That setback rocked Geoff Toovey’s side and their incis- ive attacking earlier in the game deserted them and And- rew Everingham iced the re- sult three minutes from time. ntnews.com.au l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l SPORT Roosters run hurts Anasta WESTS Tigers halfback Braith Anasta admits it does hurt to see his former club Sydney Roosters flying high in the NRL, but insists those feelings won’t play a part in Monday’s clash with the ladder leaders. Anasta, who left the Roos- ters at the end of last year, will face his old teammates at Allianz Stadium for the first time this season. While the tri-colours are relishing their berth atop the ladder with just four ga- mes remaining, the Tigers are languishing in second- last spot — having lost their last four fixtures. ‘‘It hurts a little bit, but it’s not something that I’ve thought about,’’ Anasta said of watching the Roosters’ success. ‘‘You get so en- trenched in your own world playing at the Tigers. ‘‘I look at them and I’m happy for the way they’re doing — they’re killing it. But it’s no surprise to me. ‘‘You look at the playing roster they had before they bought (James) Maloney, (Sonny Bill) Williams and (Michael) Jennings, and I thought it was strong at that stage. To add them three to it, and (Luke) O’Donnell, there’s no surprise to see how good they’re going.’’ Monday night will see the long-awaited return of vet- eran Lote Tuqiri, who hasn’t played an NRL game since breaking his arm in July last year. ‘‘I don’t know if I’ll make too much of a difference but I’m coming back and I’m really excited to play back in the NRL,’’ he said. Storm choose new assistant MELBOURNE Storm has fil- led its assistant coaching position from within, ruling out the possibility of axed North Queensland mentor Neil Henry joining the club. Club development coach Adam O’Brien will replace Kevin Walters, who will leave at the season’s end. Canterbury superstar Bar- ba is squarely in the Broncos’ sights after he admitted yes- terday he had sought a re- lease from the final two years of his NRL contract in order to be with his Queensland- based family. But the Broncos are not ex- actly short on fullback fire- power with Hoffman starring in the four tries to two victory over the spoon favourites that extended their unbeaten run to four games and kept their slim finals hopes alive. The taste of defeat should be familiar for Parramatta but the result was still a bit- ter one after they also lost hero Jarryd Hayne (suspect- ed thigh injury) after coming off second best when his 66th minute sideline scoring chance was snuffed out by that man Hoffman. Indeed Hoffman appeared everywhere last night. Time after time Hoffman extinguished Eels raids but his attacking flair also turned heads — particularly in the 28th minute. Somehow the Kiwi inter- national beat four players in a rampaging 40m run to crash over and blow the defi- cit out to 16-6 in the first half. Still, Hoffman may be the odd man out if Brisbane com- plete their bold recruitment plan for 2014 with not only Barba but Canberra No. 1 An- thony Milford also in the club’s sights. The 11th-placed Broncos need to win their final four games just to stay in the top eight mix but would not have been taking anything for granted despite lining up against the hapless Eels. The dead last Eels knocked over Brisbane 19-18 in their round nine clash this year and thrashed the hosts 44-22 the last time they met at Suncorp Stadium in 2012. However, Brisbane ap- peared in control from the outset with prop Josh McGuire running off hooker Andrew McCullough to draw first blood in the 11th minute. But Brisbane gave Hayne room to move and the make- shift Eels pivot made them pay by capping a weaving run by setting up centre Ryan Morgan in the 18th minute to lock up the scores 6-6. Winger Corey Oates (25th minute) and Hoffman crossed to make the half-time score 16-6. Brisbane put the result beyond doubt when centre Jack Reed (51st) crossed be- fore Reni Maitua (78th) reeled in the deficit. Parramatta snapped a 10-game losing run with a last round win over Wests Tigers but are still on course to be- come the first club since Souths in 2003-2004 to claim back-to-back wooden spoons.
