Descriptive Geometry CH10 : PERPENDICULARITY

Perpendicularity • If a line is ┴ to a plane, it is ┴ to every line in the plane. • EF & GJ are intersecting ┴ lines. • YX & GJ are nonintersecting ┴ lines.

Perpendicularity

Perpendicular Nonintersecting Lines • If 2 lines are ┴, they appear ┴ in any view showing at least

one of the lines in TL.

Test for Perpendicularity • If it is not evident from an existing view, construct an auxiliary

view showing one of the lines in TL (like MN) to see if the lines are ┴ in space.

Create a Plane Perpendicular to Line 1. Evaluate the given problem

& find or create a view of the line (gj) in TL.

2. Create a new plane through the point (e), where the line of the EV is ┴ to the line (gj)

3. Project the new plane into all views…

Create a Plane Perpendicular to Line 3. Project the new plane into all

views…

1) Establish any random pair of points in the new plane, like k & m.

2) In the front view, place the new points anywhere along their projection lines. Locate them in the top view according to their distance from the FL in the auxiliary.

Sticky Note
1) Draw a TL view of line MN 2) In the TL view, start a line at point O & make it perpendicular to the TL MN. This is your new plane in EV. 3) Create 2 new points along the EV of the new plane. 4) Project them across the folding plane & establish their respective locations anywhere along their projection lines. 5) Project them across the second folding plane & use traditional methods for finding their locations in this final view of the new plane.

Sticky Note
1) Create a reference plane along one of the lines using a created TL line & another line parallel to the second line. 2) Draw a primary auxiliary (A1) showing the point view of the TL line in this reference plane. 3) Draw a secondary auxiliary (A2) with a LOS parallel to the H/A1 FL. 4) Where the two original lines cross is the point view of the common perpendicular. 5) Project the points back to A1 & connect the lines (this perpendicular line is seen TL here). 6) Project the points back to the original views using traditional methods
