FKAB – HISTORY BACKGROUND
• The plan to establish the Faculty of Engineering had startedback in 1978 with the formation of the Electronic Unit andthe Industrial Chemistry Unit under the flagship of theFaculty of Science on 1st May 1978.
• Both units offered programmes linked to engineering innature to science students at the undergraduate level.
• In 1980, the Industrial Chemistry Unit was renamed to theChemistry Technology Unit which offered the ChemistryTechnology Programme.
FKAB – HISTORY BACKGROUND
• As a result of the restructuring of the Faculty of Science in 1982 which inturn formed the Faculty of Physical and Applied Sciences, both unitswere upgraded to departments under this new faculty.
• Then, both units combined together to form the Faculty of Engineeringon 1st November 1984 and were renamed to the Department ofElectrical, Electronic and Systems Engineering and the Department ofChemical and Process Engineering, respectively.
• Later on 1st January 1985, two other departments, namely theDepartment of Civil and Structural Engineering and the Department ofMechanical and Materials Engineering, were established. During theseperiods, the Faculty of Engineering operated the Bachelor ofEngineering degree programmes and the masters and doctorateprogrammes using spaces allocated in the Faculty of Physical andApplied Sciences, which are in the Chemistry, Physics and GeologyBuildings.
FKAB – HISTORY BACKGROUND
• The Faculty of Engineering was then moved into its ownbuilding on a 250,936 ft. sq. site in November 1993.
• The cost of the building was RM41 million including RM10million assistance from the World Bank.
• Then, in the period of 1998-2002, a teaching block, aresearch block and four laboratory blocks were added tocomplement the Faculty infrastructure.
• In 1995, the Advanced Engineering Centre was establishedto handle engineering consultancy and industrial relationprojects.It is then restructured in 2000 to focus specificallyto research management and industrial relationship.

• After 8 years in operation with four departments, the year2002 marks the formation of the Department ofArchitecture as the fifth department which offeredarchitectural based programmes.
• To complete the full structure, the Unit of Basic EngineeringStudies was formed in 2005 to specifically handle commonmathematic courses as well as generic related courses suchas communications and critical thinking.

Department of Civil Engineering• Welcome to The Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment,
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The department was established in 1985 and offers academic programmes for bachelor, masters and doctorate levels. The Department of Civil Engineering is offering four programmes at undergraduate level (BEng) and post-graduate level. The programmes are:
• Bachelor of Civil Engineering with Honours
• Master of Engineering (Civil)
• Master of Science
• Doctor of Philosophy
• Bachelor of Civil Engineering with Honours and Master of Engineering (Civil) programmes are carried out on Outcome Based Education (OBE) pedagogy. Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy are research programmes targeted for students who are interested in research work and wish to continue their career as researchers or academicians.
• Selected bachelor students could complete their final two semesters at University of DuisbergEssen (UDE), Germany to get two bachelor degrees, from UKM and from UDE. Besides teaching, our department is putting emphasis on research. Our research has produced many graduates at Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy levels, several patented products and publications in respected international journals.

INTERNATIONAL MOBILITY PROGRAMME
Mobility Programme between the faculty of Engineering & Built Environment UKM and Universität Duisburg-Essen, Germany
Engineering students from the respective programmes who have finished 3 years or 6 consecutive semesters at the faculty whom have achieved CGPA of at least 3.0 will be allowed to apply for the final year study at Universität Duisburg-Essen, Germany.
The selected students will follow an intensive German language course. They will continue their two final semesters courses at the German university.
The duration is about 18 months. The student will be awarded with UKM and UDE Engineering degrees.
