Fill Snow Days with Activities and Fun
A blizzard of white fl akes has been fall-ing through the night, and the school phone chain has begun. As expected,
children will have a day off from school, leaving parents
scrambling for ways to keep children occupied and supervised.
Snow days may be coveted by kids (and teachers), but they may not be as beloved
by parents who are un-accustomed to having kids
home during the week. Working parents whose businesses are open do not have the same luxury as their children to roll over in bed and avoid trekking through the white stuff .

But just because snow days are unexpected,
that does not mean parents can’t plan for them.
• Establish a snow day plan. Parents who cannot take days off from work will need a contingency plan for snow days. Organize a snow day club, wherein school parents rotate taking children for the day. Working parents can reciprocate by taking the school kids on a weekend and letting the other parents have a “date night.”
• Create a snow day entertainment bin. Rath-er than having kids spend the day watching television or playing on their tablets, parents can establish a snow day entertainment bin to encourage their kids to make the most of the day off . Th e bin can include board games, books, building block sets, paints, and other crafts.
• Plan for an indoor picnic. Kids will probably

Snow Days from cover
The holiday season is dominated by parties, family gatherings and festive foods. Overindul-gence in rich foods
and drink during the holiday season, compounded by cold weather that can make it diffi cult to exercise, often leads to weight gain by the end of the holiday season. But focusing on diet and exercise during the holiday season can help you avoid unwanted weight gain and provide more energy as the season progresses.
Th e following are some eff ective ways to sail through the season with-out gaining weight.
* Don’t scrimp and sacri-fi ce all of the time. Th e body is a powerful ma-chine, but it does not always work the way that we want it to. According to nutritional experts,
rather than metabolizing food on a daily basis, the body is geared to work over longer periods
of time. Th at means you can balance out a high-calorie day by eating less food and/or lighter fare on the days before and after those days when you anticipate overeating.
* Fill up before you go out. If you are worried about high-calorie foods and drinks that are often served at parties or holiday gath-erings, eat before going to the event. Hunger may cause you to over-eat and fi ll up on the wrong kinds of foods. Instead, eat a low-calo-
rie snack that’s high in protein and high in fi ber
Moderation is the best approach to diet during the holiday season.
Put a Stop to the Battle of the Holiday Bulge
want to spend a portion of the day playing out in the snow. After all of that physical activity, they’re bound to be famished. Spread a blan-ket out on the living room fl oor and enjoy a picnic of sandwiches, snacks and hot choco-late. Kids will enjoy the novelty of eating this way.
• Get cooking. Another way to fi ll the day is to have children participate in making meals. A snowy day is a great time to prepare meals for the rest of the week, as well as tinker with hearty, belly-fi lling recipes. Older children can help with cutting vegetables and meats, while younger kids can add seasonings to pots and mix ingredients. Involve the kids in choosing which meals to cook. Baking bread is another fun activity and enables kids to sculpt dough and then eat the fruits of their labors.
• Go the movies. If roads are passable, con-sider a trip to the movie theater, where you can enjoy a matinee. Bring a few friends along and make it a fun-fi lled outing.
• Create snow art. Fill squeeze or squirt bot-tles with some water and food coloring. Allow kids to go out in the yard and create some pic-tures with the snow as their canvas.
• Catch up on cleaning. Cleaning may not be the most exciting snow day activity, but it
might be the most productive. Children can spend time sorting through toys and belong-ings in their rooms.
• Take a nature walk. Grab those boots and insulated pants and head outdoors. A walk in the brisk, cold air can boost spirits and intro-duce kids to the beauty of winter landscapes. Take the camera along and encourage kids to snap pictures of their favorite vistas. ■

Travel is a signifi cant and often ex-pensive part of the holiday season for many men and women. Whether you’re hitting the open road or taking
to the friendly skies to visit loved ones, this year there are various ways you can cut the costs of holiday travel.
• Book a budget-friendly rental. Th e holiday season is a busy time of year for rental car agencies, and holiday travelers who are late to reserve their vehicles may fi nd themselves driving gas guzzlers for the duration of their trip. When booking your automobile rental this holiday season, do your best to reserver a car early so you have access to the agency’s entire inventory and not just what’s left on the lot. If you do not specifi cally reserve a fuel-effi cient vehicle, you might be stuck with a large SUV or another car or truck that costs a lot at the pump.
• Bring along your own food. Food is another oft-overlooked expense of holiday travel. If you’re fl ying, try to eat before you leave for the airport or look up the airport and/or airline regulations to determine if you can bring your own food. Food purchased at the airport or on the airplane will be more expensive and is often more unhealthy than meals you can prepare at home. When driving, pack a cooler instead of relying on truck stop eateries, which tend to be fast food restaurants.
• Try to bring gifts rather than ship them. When possible, try to squeeze as many of your holiday
gifts into your car rather than shipping them. Shipping costs can quickly add up, but you can save a lot of money if you make room for gifts in your trunk or in the backseat of your vehicle. Just be sure that the gifts do not compromise your visibility on the road. Even if you are fl y-ing, it might be more economical to place gifts in a bag you can check rather than paying sepa-rate shipping charges for each gift. Research the baggage fees versus the cost of shipping to make a more informed decision.
• Split hosting duties. If you want to save money but are accustomed to traveling to visit fam-ily and friends during the holiday season, then consider hosting a gathering at your own home. Friends and family likely won’t scoff at being re-lieved of some of their annual hosting duties, and you can limit the cost of your travel to just one trip instead of multiple trips.
• Share lodging. If you are used to staying in ho-tels when traveling for the holiday season, then you may want to share a hotel room with family members who also stay in hotels. Lodging costs tend to be very expensive during the holiday season, but splitting such costs with a friend or family member can help you stay within bud-get.
Traveling during the holiday season can be ex-pensive, but men and women willing to make a few travel concessions can save themselves a substantial amount of money. ■

The end of the year can be a great time for personal refl ection, but also an interesting time to look back on the more notable events that took
place across the globe since the most recent turn of the calendar year. Th e following are some of the more notable world events to un-fold in 2014.
• An outbreak of the Ebola virus begins in West Africa in February. Th e outbreak infects and even kills thousands of people, and re-mains a concern throughout the year, both in Africa and across the globe.
• Th e Seattle Seahawks dominate the Den-ver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII, which be-comes the most viewed television event in the United States. More than 111 million viewers tuned in to watch the game, which took place on February 2 in East Rutherford, NJ. Despite concerns about weather-related events in the weeks leading up to the big game, the game was ultimately played in relatively mild condi-tions.
• Th e Olympic Winter Games begin in Sochi, Russia in February. Similar to the Super Bowl, the Sochi games are surrounded by weather concerns, as many speculate that Sochi’s cli-mate is simply not cold enough to host the Olympic Winter Games. Th e weather does raise concerns once the Games commence, but the events go on with little interruption.
• Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappears over the Gulf of Th ailand. Th e Boeing 777 airliner, which took off in March and was carrying 239 people, had yet to be found at press time.
• Boko Haram, an Islamist Jihadist and terror-ist organization, claims responsibility for the April abduction of nearly 300 female students from a government school in Nigeria. Citing safety concerns, the government had closed the school in the weeks prior to the abduction, only reopening to allow students to take fi nal exams. Th e students had yet to be released at press time.
• Felipe VI ascends to the Spanish throne in June after his father, King Juan Carlos I, abdi-cates. Juan Carlos I became the fourth Europe-an monarch to abdicate in a little over a year, following Pope Benedict XVI (February 2013), Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands (April 2013) and Belgium’s King Albert II (July 2013).
• In July, tensions between Israel and Pales-tine boil over once again after three Israeli teenagers are kidnapped and murdered and one Palestinian teenager is killed in retalia-tion. Many people are killed in the resulting confl ict, which includes missile strikes and a ground invasion.
• By a 55 percent majority, the people of Scot-land vote “No” to an independence referen-dum that would have separated the country from the United Kingdom. More than 3.6 million Scots voted in the September referen-dum, which would have ended a centuries-old union had the people of Scotland voted for in-dependence.
• New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter plays the fi nal game of his career on Septem-ber 28. In an ironic twist, the game is played at Boston’s Fenway Park, home to the Boston Red Sox, the Yankees’ fi ercest rival. ■
• Boko Haram, an Islamist Jihadist and terror-ist organization, claims responsibility for the

Winter Beauty Mistakes to Avoid
Cold, blustery weather is waiting to rear its ugly head whether the public likes it or not. Winter weather
may require revamping your normal health and beauty routine, as your
skin and hair may need a bit more attention this time of year.
Chances are you may be doing one or more things wrong this
winter, according to beauty ex-perts. Learn the mistakes many
people make and how to avoid them.
• Using the same foundation: Makeup needs may change in the winter. In addition to exploring a diff erent color palette, you may
need to actually change the formu-lation of the products you use. Skin
tends to dry out in the cold, neces-sitating a switch to a foundation that
boasts moisturizing agents. People who fi nd their skin is normally oily may fi nd a product for combination skin acceptable.
• Taking prolonged, hot showers: Many peo-ple enjoy lingering in a hot shower or bath during the colder months of the year. But too much hot water can compromise your skin’s ability to contain moisture, further complicat-ing dryness that comes with the season.
• Covering dry skin with makeup: Slathering on makeup to hide dry skin will only make it more noticeable. Instead, do some gentle exfoliation and moisturization to combat the problem. Gently rub a wet washcloth over dry areas to remove fl aky skin and prep your face for makeup application.
• Going overboard with a tan: Artifi cial tans can be unhealthy for the skin. Do not try to compensate for shorter bursts of sunlight by spending hours in a tanning bed. Avoid self-tanners and bronzers as well. If you must use

Accessories are everything particularly during the holidays, when we are running from the offi ce to a party trying to fi ght the chill without looking like a snow(wo)man. During this time of year we usually are running from one party to another and we don’t have the time or funds to change our outfi ts.
The best way to change your look is by changing your accessories using a bold statement necklace, a pair of dazzling earings and some fabulous bracelets can change the look of any outfi t. A great accessory to have when going from day
to night is one of our cross body bags that also doubles as a clutch. Keep the strap on the bag for daytime and clip it off and use it as a clutch for night time. When you’re going from the car to the party you don’t have to freeze your ears off. You can still look great with our large variety of ear warm-ers and beanie hats. Our beanie hats can also be worn indoors because they’re so great looking!
Headbands are also great! This is largely due to the fact that there are so many types to choose from and that you can wear them with most hairstyles. And, a beautiful black cape or a fancy scarf adds the fi nishing toutch to any outfi t. At Pink Jewels we can help you accessorize any outfi t! Stop in and let us show you the perfect accessories for your day to evening outfi ts. We are also happy to suggest the accessories that make wonderful gifts for everyone on your Holiday gift list.

a bronzer, stick to one shade darker than your skin tone and only touch the places the sun would hit naturally.
• Skipping sunscreen: The sun still shines in the winter, and skin is still susceptible to damage. Make sun protection a year-round part of your beauty regimen. Use a moistur-izer with SPF built in to make morning rou-tines that much easier.
• Forgetting hands and feet: Skin on hands and feet can dry out in winter air. Wear gloves to protect hands and thoroughly moisturize. Use a pumice stone to give feet an exfoliating treat and slather on the moisturizer. Pull on a pair of cotton socks and let that moisture penetrate feet for soft soles and toes.
• Selecting the wrong lip balm: C h a p p e d lips seem to be par for the c o u r s e this time of year. Instead of reaching for a waxy lip balm full of menthol, w h i c h can exacerbate already dry lips, select a lip butter or something that has a more liquid consistency to get into the cracks of dry lips.
• Ignoring hair: Your hair and scalp may need some winter TLC as well. Use extra condi-tioner to combat dryness and breakage. Rely on heat-protection styling products to com-bat damage from hair driers and other heat-based styling tools.
Winter beauty is attainable, especially when men and women remember to compensate for the poor conditions. ■
Winter Beauty from page 10before leaving the house. Eating beforehand may help you avoid the chips and dips.
* Get plenty of sunshine when possible. Lack of sunlight can attribute to winter blues, which may lead some people to rely on comfort foods. Such foods are typically rich in carbohydrates, fats and sugars. Spending time outdoors in the sun each day can improve your mood and get you off of the couch.
* Fill up your plate with the right mix of foods. Don’t deny yourself when faced with a big holi-day dinner. Rather, fill the plate with a good mix of foods. Devote more space to lean proteins, such as roasted turkey or chicken. Even lean ham is good. Devote much of the rest of your plate to roasted vegetables and whole grains. Take only small portions of high-fat foods like candied yams or bread stuffings. You will still satisfy your craving, but you won’t be overdo-ing it.
* Skip the spirits for the most part. Alcoholic beverages are loaded with empty calories. Many people would rather reserve bonus calo-ries for a piece of pie or a rich brownie. Limit yourself to one drink per day.
* Exercise every day. It can be easy to push exer-cise aside when you’re busy with holiday tasks. But soon your metabolism may slow down in response to your body’s suddenly more sed-entary lifestyle, leading to weight gain. Aim for some sort of daily exercise, whether you decide park further away from stores at the mall or take the stairs instead of the escalator. Don’t relegate exercise to a New Year’s resolution. Inactiv-ity will only mean you have to work harder in the future to shed those unwanted pounds you packed on during the holiday season.
Weight gain may be another part of the holiday season for many men and women. But indi-viduals concerned about adding extra pounds can stop the pattern of gaining weight during the holiday season by making smart choices throughout the season. ■

Essex County kids, students, and youth now have a creative outlet for exploration, improvisation, and imagination at Pucci Performing Arts Centre (PPAC). After students working hard all school year on academics and sports, this summer is a great time for the Essex County young to recharge, explore and enjoy through creative outlets like PPAC. Last year PPAC danced its way to Livingston, NJ by relocating to Livingston Center area after becoming established in the other Essex County local community programs such as municipal summer camp recreation programs. Many Livingston, West Orange, Roseland and East Hanover students have grown up to love dance, theater, and the performing arts after being inspired by PPAC founder and artistic director Kathy Pucci. Her enthusiasm and passion for her craft helps further inspire young people. Kathy’s background extends not only into the professional dance & theater arenas, but also the special event and entertainment production field. These specialized art forms have motivated her to develop and offer the Summer OnStage Theater Camp at PPAC right here in Livingston, NJ Summer OnStage Theater Camp help students develop their theater skills while exploring acting, dancing, singing, and show production. Students learn to build character with perseverance, focus, collaboration and non-verbal communication skills. “The most passionate performers are those who are exposed to a variety of techniques,” Kathy Pucci states, “Our programs are specifically designed to add to that spark of creativity and stir it into a major flame.” Some current and former campers have gone on to perform in Regional Theater and Broadway shows. This year’s distinguished faculty, which reads like a Broadway Playbill, will focus on acting, improvisation, voice projection, stage combat, comedy, set, prop and costume design, along with various genres of dance. Campers have the opportunity to write scenes, choreograph, and create their own characters. At the end of each week the kids
perform a show of their own creation that is open to friends and family. In case a vibrant, Broadway-style learning environment is not enough, or doesn’t fit into your ac-tive camper summer schedule, evening dance classes (Ballet, Tap, Jazz and Hip Hop) are offered as well.
