The entire curriculum, evaluation criteria and bi-laws have been developed for the MSc course in
Atmospheric Dynamics and Lightning Protection which has been approved by the Higher Degrees
Committee and the Senate. It has been decided to conduct the course alternatively with the MSc

6.5 RESEARCH CAPACITY BUILDING AT INTERNATIONAL LEVEL
1. Establishment of African Center for Lightning and Electromagnetics (ACLE)
On the basis of a resolution passed at International Symposium on Lightning Protection in
Kathmandu, two successful visits were made to Uganda during the last two years to establish the
above center. As Makerere University Business School provided infrastructure for the operation
of the center, it was inaugurated in March 2014. The institute has been growing very fast since its
inauguration.
2. Establishment of Bangladesh Lightning Awareness Centre (BLAC)
After several years of discussion and a two week visit to Dhaka in November 2004, the above
training and information centre has been established under Technological Assistance for Rural
Advancement (TARA), Dhaka. The initial funding was provided by USAID/SARI

3. Establishment of Bangladesh Lightning Research Group
During the same visit in 2004 as described above, a Research Group has been started in
Jahangirnagar University, under which several students have been reading for their PhD
Degrees in lightning science at present. The initial funding was provided by USAID/SARI.

4. Establishment of Lightning Awareness Centre and Lightning Research Centre in
Bhutan
In consequence to a two week visit made to the Royal Bhutan Institute of Technology in
December, 2004 to conduct a training program, the LAC and LRC have been established.
However, due to the shifting of locations of the main campus these two institutions became
somewhat inactive recently. The initial funding was provided by UNESCO.

5. Enhancement of Lightning Physics Research Group in Colombia
During a three week visit to the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Bogota, Colombia in
September, 2004 the EMC research group at the University was strengthened with the initiation
of Lightning protection research team. At present the institution facilitates a number of students
reading for PhD Degree in Lightning Protection. The initial funding was provided by NAM S&T
Centre, New Delhi and COLCIENCIAS, Colombia.

6. Establishment of Lightning Awareness Centre in Kerala, India (KLAC)
After two years of planning followed by a one week visit for a training program in 2006, the LAC,
Kerala has been established under the Regional Energy Centre, Kerala. The institution is very
active in India and it has conducted a large number of training programs so far. The initial funding
was provided by OBO Bettermann, Germany

7. Establishment of a High Voltage Research Laboratory and Postgraduate Program
at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Saudi Arabia
During a one week visit to KFUPM in November, 2007, initial round of discussions has been
completed in establishing a High Voltage Research laboratory and a Research Group. The initial
funding was provided by KFUPM. The program became inactive as the key person (Prof.
Shwehdi), left KFUPM.

8. Establishment of Lightning Protection and High Voltage Research Group in the
University of Putra, Malaysia (UPM)
After several months of distant communication through email and web conferencing a research
group on LP and HV has been established in UPM. I have also mediated research collaboration
between UPM research group and the Lightning Research groups in Uppsala University Sweden
and University of Florida, USA. The UPM will be the main funding body for the project. (This
project finally became the most successful initiation of my career as it lead to the formation of
CELP of which I am the Head at present)

9. Establishment of a Research Project on the Study of the Variation of Geological
and Atmospheric Conditions in the pre/post-Earthquake Periods in Pakistan
After six months of discussions and feasibility studies a project proposal is developed in January,
2008 to conduct the above project with the collaboration of Bahria University, University of AJK
and the University of Colombo. The funds for the project will be sought from HEC, Pakistan and
international donor agencies.

10. Establishment of Research Group on Lightning Protection & Electromagnetic
Compatibility and development of a PhD/MSc Degree program in the same subject
area at COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Pakistan
After two years of initial discussions and a two week visit to the CIIT in February, 2008, a
comprehensive project proposal has been developed for the above purpose. The program is
expected to be started in Spring 2009. The funding will be sought from HEC, Pakistan and CIIT.

11. Establishment of Mountain Meteorology Research Unit at Department of
Meteorology, COMSATS University, Islamabad, Pakistan
Following two atmospheric conferences in Nepal and Pakistan, a proposal was developed to
form the above group and forwarded to Rector CIIT. The proposal is accepted and the group
activities are finalizing at present.
