ELIMS

1• Originally in Italian, the name meant belief. In the 16th century

the act of Z was the tasting of food and drinks by a servant for a

lord or other important person (such as the pope or a cardinal)

in order to test for poison. The name passed then to the room

where the act took place, then to the furniture. The

term Z became very fashionable in the US during the second

half of the 19th century. In modern times, a Z is more often a

type of sideboard used in the home or restaurant. In dining

rooms, it is typically made from wood and used as a platform to

serve buffet meals. In restaurant kitchens, made from stainless

steel, it provides a side surface and storage cupboards.

*5• Speaking about his most famous race, he says: “Going into the

stadium for the final, I was quite relaxed but when I saw my

rivals, tension mounted. And with each minute it increased. I

drew lane five with the South African Malcolm Spence to my

left and the German Manfred Kinder on my right. I was going

strong till about 250 meters. But then I slowed down a bit. I

thought the pace was very fast and I would fizzle out in the end

if I continued at that speed. At that point I even looked back or

maybe it was just a side -glance. But that fraction of a second

decided my fate. One by one they all caught up with me…”

London (1851), Paris (1855), and expanded to Vienna (1872)

and St. Petersburg (1874). It opened a factory in Geroldsgrün

where slide rules were produced. It expanded internationally

granddaughter with a cadet of the Counts of Y, the A.W. Y

•The early citations of this phrase use

various forms of the spelling of the

religion. The meaning of the phrase is

that ‘If one's will does not prevail, one

must submit to an alternative'. Present

uses of the phrase usually use the

word 'mountain' rather than ‘hill’.

If the mountain will not come to Mahomet,

Mahomet will go to the mountain.

*15Below are four lines from the poem Eloisa to

Abelard by Alexander Pope, the story of a tragic love affair,

where forgetfulness became the heroine's only comfort:

How happy is the blameless vestal's lot!

The world forgetting, by the world forgot.
