GraduationRequirementsInordertograduatefromLindenHall,astudentmustaccrueatleast23creditsduringherfouryearsofhighschoolaccordingtothefollowingrequirements:

• English–fourcredits,includingatleastonefullyearofEnglishbeyondESLprogramming

• Mathematics–fourcredits,includingatleastAlgebra1,Geometry,andAlgebra2

• History–threecredits,includingU.S.History• Science–threecredits,includingChemistryandBiology• WorldLanguages–atleasttwocredits,includingstudyinherchosen

languagethroughatleastlevelthree• Arts–twocreditsamongvisualandperformingartselectivecourses• PhysicalEducation–twocredits,awardedas0.5creditseachyearfor

participationinatleastoneinterscholasticsportteamorphysicalactivityelective

• Threeadditionalacademicorartcreditsinelectiveoradvancedlevelclassesinanydepartment.

Inaddition,studentsmustmeetthefollowingco-curricularrequirementstoqualifyforgraduation:

• CommunityserviceasoutlinedintheStudentHandbook• Summerreadingeachsummer:LindenHallstudentsareaskedtoreadatleast

twobooksoverthesummer,ateacher-sponsoredbookandatleastoneotherbookfromthelist,whichmaybeabookrequiredforanacademicclass.Studentsmayhavemorethanoneclassbooktoread,butstillmustreadateacher-sponsoredbook.Studentsshouldreturntoschoolinthefallpreparedtodiscussallbookstheywererequiredtoreadandwithanyadditionalworkcompletedasstatedinthesummerreadinghandout.Studentswhodonotsuccessfullymeetexpectationsforsummerreadingwillbeaskedtoreviewtheirbooksagainandwillbeaskedtotakeaquizorwriteapaperontheirbookstoavoidafailingmarkforsummerreading.

• Ayearlyspeech:LindenHallhasanestablishedandwell-respectedtraditionofstudentsingrades10-12givingspeechestothestudentbodythroughouttheyear.Publicspeakingexperiencebuildsconfidenceinstudentsandhelpsthemleavealegacy.Seniorspresenttheirspeechesinchapel.

Tobeconsideredafull-timestudent,studentsmustcarryaminimumoffivecoreacademiccourseseachyear.PostgraduatestudentswhomeetLindenHall’sgraduationrequirementsandcarryafullloadoffiveclasseswillbeissuedacertificateatgraduationpendingsuccessfulcompletionoftheyear.

CourseOfferingsInsummary,

• Englishisofferedeachyear,includinghonors-levelcoursesbeginningintheninthgradeandAdvancedPlacementclassesofferedtoeligibleeleventhandtwelfthgradestudents.

• Mathematicsfollowsasequentialdevelopmentseriesfrommiddleschoolmathematicscoursestopost-calculusofferings.HonorscoursesareofferedbeginningwithHonorsAlgebra2,andAdvancedPlacementcoursesareavailableinStatistics,CalculusAB,andCalculusBC.

• Historycoursesprogressfromsixththroughtwelfthgradeincludingamongothersstudiesinancienthistory,women’shistory,civics,WorldandAmericanhistory,arthistory,economics,andgovernment.Honorscoursesareavailableforaselectgroupofninthgradestudents,andAdvancedPlacementofferingsareavailabletoqualifiedstudentsstartinginthetenthgrade.

• Scienceclassesincludespecial-interestclassesinMiddleSchooldesignedtoemphasizeexplorationandinquiryandtraditionallaboratoryclassesinUpperSchoolphysics,chemistry,andbiology.HonorsclassesareofferedintheUpperSchool,andAdvancedPlacementcoursesareavailableassecond-yearofferingstoqualifiedjuniorsandseniors.

• WorldLanguageclassesfollowsequentialofferingsinFrench,Mandarin,andSpanish,throughtheAdvancedPlacementcourseineachlanguage.ClassicallanguagesaretaughtintheMiddleSchoolandprovidegroundingforstudyofEnglishandotherworldlanguages.

• Artscoursesinstudioart,photography,music,andtheatermayberepeatedeachsemester.

• PhysicalEducationisrequiredeachyearforeveryLindenHallstudent.ThisrequirementissatisfiedbyparticipationinateamorclubsportatLindenHallorthroughthecooperativeprogramatWarwickHighSchool.Ifastudentdoesnotplayaseasonofsport,shemustcompleteaLindenHalldesignatedafter-schoolactivitytwiceaweekthroughouttheyear;optionsincluderidinglessonsanddance.MiddleSchoolstudentsareenrolledinyearlongphysicaleducationclassesandmayadditionallyparticipateinafterschoolsports.

DuetotheincreasedworkloadanddemandsofAPclasses,studentsarerecommendedtotakenomorethanoneAPcourseinthetenthgradeyear,nomorethantwointheeleventhgrade,andnomorethanthreeinthetwelfthgradeyear.StudentswhowishtoexceedtherecommendedloadofAPclassesmustseekadministrativeapprovalthroughtheAcademicOffice.

MUSICCOURSESMusicclassesatLindenHalldevelopcomprehensivemusicianshipwithafocusonmusicalliteracyanddevelopment.Webelievethatallstudentsaremusicalbynatureandhavetremendouspotentialtolearnandenjoymusic.Researchshowsthatmusichelpsstudentsdevelophigher-orderthinkingskillsandanincreaseddesiretolearn.LanguageofMusicThissixth-gradecourseintroducesstudentstotheconceptsofreading,writing,andperformingmusic.ThroughacomprehensiveKodalycurriculum,studentsgainadeeperunderstandingforreading,writing,andperformingmusicindividuallyandingroups.Studentsstudykeyelementsinmusictheoryincludingintervals,keysignature,rhythmicnotation,sight-singing,andsolfege.Performersgainmusicalconfidenceastheylearntointerpretmusiccohesivelyandeffectively.AuralsandCompositionThissemester-longUpperSchoolcourseprovidesstudentswiththeopportunitytolearntheartofcreatingmusic.Buildingontheirmusicliteracyskills,studentswillexpandtheirmusicwritingandknowledgethroughsinging,composition,instrumentalperformance,scoreanalysis,andresearch.Studentswritetheirownsongs,readandanalyzecomposedmusic,andeffectivelyapplytheelementsofsuccessfulperformancetotheirmusicmaking.In2016-2017,studentsmayhavetheopportunitytotakeAuralsandCompositionasayear-longcourse.MusicandCultureThissemester-longUpperSchoolcourseexplorestheroleofmusicthroughtimeinseveralcultures.Studentslearnthebasicelementsofmusiclistening,majorhistoricaldevelopmentinthearts,andtraditionalformsofmusicalandartisticexpressionindifferentcultures.Studentsstudydances,rhythms,folksongs,andperformancestylesfromdifferentcountries.Studentssharetheartandmusicalstylesoftheirculturewithpeers.Notofferedin2016-2017

TechnologyandMusicThissemester-longUpperSchoolcourseexploresthefundamentalsofrecordingandproducingmusicinthemodernworld.Studentsexploreinnovationsinthemanipulationofmusicinahands-onlearningenvironment,learningfromindividualsatlocalglobally-knownproductioncompanies.Studentsrecord,produce,andmanagethecreationofacompilationalbumofstudentandfacultyperformancesaspartoftheestablishedLindenHallstudioprogram“Tech41”.Notofferedin2016-2017Women’sChoirWomen’sChoirallowsstudentstheopportunitytoperformwithpeersinaschoolconcertchoirsetting.Studentslearnchoralrepertoirethroughaperformance-basedcurriculumandperformatseveralon-campuseventsthroughouttheyear.Thereisnoauditionrequiredtoenrollandpreviouschoralexperienceisnotrequired.Studentsgainabetterunderstandingofthefundamentalsofmusicalliteracythroughanactiverehearsalprocess.OrchestraTheLindenHallOrchestraconsistsofstring,woodwind,brass,andpercussionfamilies.Thisclasseducatesandreinforcesthefundamentalprinciplesofplayinginanensemblewhileperformingmusicofanappropriatelevel.EnsemblemembersmusthaveatleastfourmonthsofexperienceplayingtheirinstrumentpriortoenrollinginOrchestra.PERFORMINGARTSCOURSESMiddleSchoolDramaHeldduring2ndand3rdquarters,LindenHall’sMiddleSchoolDramaclassallowssixth,seventh,andeighthgradegirlstoexperiencethejoysofperformance.Studentsparticipateintheauditionprocess,learntheaterdisciplinethroughimprovisationanddramaexercises,andperformafull-lengthplay.Studentsareintroducedtotheatervocabularyandthegeographyofthestage.In2016-2017,MiddleSchoolstudentswillhavetheopportunitytoparticipateinMiddleSchoolDramaastheyauditionfor,practice,andpresenttheMiddleSchoolplayintheeveningsduringQ2andQ3.IntroductiontoTheaterWhileprimarilyanactingcourse,IntroductiontoTheaterprovidesanoverviewofWesterntheatertraditions.Thisstudiocoursefocusesondevelopingpoiseandconfidence.Vocaltechniqueisdevelopedthroughvariousexercises.Studentsareencouragedtoattendamateurandprofessionalproductionsatanumberoflocaluniversitiesaswellasworld-classtheatercompanies.Studentswillbecomefamiliarwithbasicstagegeography,movement,andtermsassociatedwiththetheater.Whilegearedtothenoviceactress,thisclassisstronglyrecommendedforESLstudentsandanystudentseekingtogainconfidencewithpublicspeaking.Whileitisnotrequired,studentsareadvisedtotakethisintroductorycoursepriortoelectingourActingclass.
