Rhythm was key for this winning ‘bee’>> Celebrating their victory are the top three ‘bees’ Nqobile Memela (second place),Tshegofatso Tseke (winner) and Nhlakanipho Mkhize (third place).
AFOOT-TAPPING rhythm was the keyto Tshegofatso Tseke’s victory in thefirst 2014 Durban and North Coast
KZN Premier Spelling Bee.Tshegofatso, from Adams College in
Adams Mission near Amanzimtoti, wenthead to head with second-place bee Nqo-bile Memela, relying on the rhythm of herfoottappingtohelpherrememberdifficultwords that had even seasoned teachersand professionals at the event in KwaDu-kuza stumped.
The event saw more than 50 pupilsfrom schools within the iLembe and eThe-kwini municipalities compete at theStanger High School hall on Saturday.
Tshegofatso, who achieved victory af-ter spelling the word “tessellate” correctly, breezed through every word with confi-dence (tessellate means to decorate afloor or pavement with mosaics or to covera plain surface with the repeated use of asingle shape, without gaps or overlap-
ping). She walked away with R6000 in cash
as well as a trophy and certificate, a boxof books sponsored by Via Afrika and Rota-
ry, a Gems Schoolwear voucher and a Sparvoucher. Her teacher, E.V. Mbele, also re-ceived a Spar voucher, a Kindle and a bookvoucher and R1 000 cash. The school re-
ceived books from Via Afrika. Both second and third place went to
Nqobile Memela and Nhlakanipho Mkhizefrom Mbheki Secondary.
When judges Neil Tapinos (generalmanager for KZN community titles), VusiMthalane(newseditor,SouthCoastFever)and Thembeka Dlamini (iLembe Depart-ment of Education) made their way to thefore, contestants knew the time had comefor their hard work to finally pay off.
While shot nerves got the better ofsome, others shone through the elimina-tion rounds until only 10 remained.
The top five contestants were giventwo chances to prove themselves as a bo-nus round applied.
In the bonus round, contestants had tospell and define the words which the judg-es asked.
The bonus round was won bySiphumelele Njapha from Sidelile Highwho walked away with R5000 as well as
other prizes.Second and third-place pupils in the
bonus round also received cash prizes.Speaking to the Fever after the compe-
tition, Tshegofatso said: “I am keeping thewinning money for my tertiary education, well, to add to the bursary that I wonthrough the competition.
Teacher Mbele said: “Our pupils wereextremely diligent. We were exceptionallypositive and worked tremendously hard. ”
Nirvana Naidoo from Boston College, who presented bursaries to the top threesaid: “The Durban and North Coast 2014KZN Premier Spelling Bee competition wasan exhilarating experience.”
“The participants, who needed nervesof steel, had the audience captivated.”
Marketing manager of Media24 Localnewspapers Sharmaine Reuter-Smithsaid, “I want to shout out loud ‘a buzzingthankyoutoallofoursponsorswhoinvest-ed in the 2014 KZN Premier Spelling Bee’.
“These grand contributions have al-lowed us to reach our aim which is to createeducational opportunities, and now our‘bees’ with their schools have the tools todo so.”

INmyinteractionwithchildrenrecently, Ihavenoticed thatmany of themdonot have the cor-rect pencil grip.
Anincorrectpencilgripaffectsneatnessandspeed of writing. Neatness and writing speedare critical to children’s success in the class-room.
Ifachilddoesnotwriteneatly, veryoftentheteacher is going to mark work wrong if s/hedoes not understand what has been written;and the child loses unnecessary marks.
If a child cannot write swiftly and speedily,s/he will have problems completing tests andexams within the allotted time; which alsocauses them to lose valuable marks.
AcorrectpencilgripmustbetaughtinGradeR and reinforced in Grade 1.
However, children do interact with pencilsand crayons even before they start formalschool, and parents need to pay attention totheir children’s pencil grip as trying to rectifyproblems later only loses precious learningtime.

ELEVEN plants, 118 countries, 88awards - and now, three million salesfor the Chevrolet Cruze.
The best-selling Chevrolet modelcrossed the milestone this month, just 16months after selling its 2 millionth model. From South Africa to the U.S. and Canada,to Laos and the Philippines, Lebanon andQatar, theChevroletCruzehasproveditselfa global player among mid-sized cars.
“The Cruze is an adaptable car that ca-ters to the demands of nearly every marketin the world,” says Alan Batey, GM execu-tive vice-president of Global Chevrolet, inDetroit.
“It is testament to Chevrolet’s globalfocus and capabilities to offer a car thatis highly regarded in so many places.”
The Cruze has collected 39 productawards in China, 27 in the U.S. and 12 in Bra-zil.
Chevrolet is committed to buildingproducts in the markets they are sold, andthe Cruze is built in 11 countries on fivecontinents.
GM design teams in South Korea andGermany had the global consumer inmind when developing the car in just 27months in the late 2000s before debutingin South Korea in November of 2008.
“Medium to small-car sales aroundthe world have been growing exponen-
tially as emerging markets, in Asia andSouth America, increase car ownershipwhile mature markets, like the U.S., down-size for fuel economy,” says Michelle Krebs, senior analyst for AutoTrader.com “Small-er cars, like the Cruze, are driving salesglobally and will continue to do so.”
The Cruze also endured intensive dura-bility testing, including extreme weathertests and more than 210 crash tests tai-lored to the regulatory demands of thecountries where it is sold.
To appeal to different market tastes, the Cruze is available in three body styles, including a four-door sedan, five-doorhatchback and station wagon. Cruze ispowered by five different engines globally— 1.4, 1.6, and 1.8-litre petrol engines, and1.7 and 2.0-litre diesel engines.
Chevrolet recently also launched anew version of the Cruze catering to thestyling and packaging demands of Chinesecustomers. Cruze sales in China lead allcountries with 1.13 million sold since itslaunch in 2009.
In South Africa, the Chevrolet Cruze issold as a seven-model range comprisingtwo hatchbacks and five sedans, poweredby either 1.6-litre or 1.4-litre turbochargedpetrol engines or the 2.0-litre diesel motor.Since launch in 2009, Cruze sales in SouthAfrica have totalled 27 000. — Supplied.

“Following the successful introductionof the SLK 250 AMG Line early in 2013, weare now adding the new SL 400 AMG Lineand the E 250 CDI Coupé to our wide rangeof dream cars,” says Selvin Govender, divi-sional manager, Mercedes-Benz Cars.

“We have now updated our E-ClassCoupé range to include the E 250 CDI Cou-pé.Thisfourcylinderdieselengineisknownfor its efficiency and features the latest in-jection technology. Thanks to a reviseddrivetrain it is now even more economical,”adds Govender.
Now in its sixth generation, the iconicMercedes-Benz SL sports car continues tobe as popular as ever. The SL’s history datesback more than 60 years to the 300 SL rac-ing sports car of 1952.
“AswiththeSLK,fortheSLmodelrangeall series derivatives come standard withthe AMG Sport Line. This offering is provingto be extremely popular with our custom-

WHEN getting your gar-den ready for thewarmermonths, it is im-
portant to start with a clean gar-den.
Weeding iseasierwhen thesoilis moist so before you weed, giveit a good watering. and you caneasily pull out any unwantedplants.
Leaves also discolour duringwinter, so cut back any old leavesto make space for fresh ones.
Getridofanyannualplantsthathave run their course so you canplant the new seasons annuals.
Annual plants are great forsplashes of colour in your garden, especially for boarders, plantersor hanging baskets.
This is also the best time toprune and trim trees and shrubs, the cutswill heal faster in the cold.
Rakeawaydead leavesandde-bris lying around.
This spring clean will make ahuge difference to your gardenandgiveyouabetter ideaofwhereyou can plant new plants.
Food for the soilDue to rain and reworking of
soil, the fertile top layer of soilsometimes gets depleted and theimportant nutrients that plantsneed diminishes.
Theeasiestwayof boosting thesoil again is by working compostinto the top layer. If you’ve madea pile of the dead leaveswhen youwere cleaning up, you can alsowork this into the soil.Lush lawns
In winter the cold will causeyour lawn to become bare or de-velop brown patches. Scarifyingor raking the grass helps bringlightandairtothesoil levelanden-courages lush, green growth.
Any bare patches in the lawncan be re-seeded by loosening thesoil. Keep the grass well watereduntil seedsgerminateandthenewgrass establishes itself. Also takeyour lawn mower in for a serviceto make sure it is ready to keepyour lawn neat and tidy.Lay out your plan
Once you’ve done the above, you will now have acleancanvas topaintyour spring gardenon. This is the timetodecide if you havespace for a herb orvegetable patch.
A birdbath orfeeder can also canadd colour andsound to your sur-roundings.
Maybe youwouldlike to change a cor-ner of your gardeninto a private nookfor entertaining.
Theeasiestway isto make a sketch ofyour garden to get aclear picture of yourplan of action.
Hard landscap-ing is also becomingvery popular and isalso a way of savingwater.
Remember thisgolden tip for beingwater wise — plantindigenous plants.
You are nowready to enjoy thebounty of spring andto get the best out ofyour garden all yearround.

Update your look for spring>> Stick to these help tips to help achieve a fresh look without breaking the bank
UPDATING your look doesn’tmean you need to invest in awhole new wardrobe. Small
changes can make a big difference.Updating your wardrobe doesn’t
mean you have to become a fashion
victim or a walking label. Rather, it’sabout carefully selecting items thatwill easilyupdateyourexistingward-
robe to give you the look you desire. Most fashion items come at vari-
ous price points. If you are going to
2. Cat-eye sunglassesThevintageglamlookoftheSixties
isbig forspringandcat-eyesunglass-esisamust.Youwillseetheminavar-ious sizes, colours and shapes to suita variety of face shapesandcomplex-ions. When it comes to carrying off apair of daring sunglasses, it comesdown to your personal style. A dra-matic pair may suit a vintage queen, but a subtler cat-eye shapemayworkbetterforaclassicdresser.Youcanre-ally have fun with this one.
3. Something sportyThe sporty look has turned chic.
Mixing sporty items with femininepieces is what it’s all about. You cangowildwith this trend or keep it sub-tle.Boldlymixasportytopwithaflirtyskirt and sneakers or just trade yourwedges or trainers for fashionablesneakers when wearing jeans. Makeit your own and play.
4. Flower powerJust when I thought that the floral
trend couldn’t get any bigger…it did. There are a huge variety of floralprints out there to choose from. Ev-erything from subtle monotone, pas-tel watercolours to bold and bright.
If you are afraid towear prints be-cause you think they will make youlookbigger,rememberthatprintsdis-guiseamultitudeof things thatplainswon’t.
5. A flirty dressDresses aremy all-time favourite,
splurge, then make sure youwill love it for a few seasons tocome. If it’s a passing craze, then settle for a cost-effectiverendition.
Here are a few of my favou-ritepieces toadd to yourward-robe this spring:
1. BroguesThese masculine-looking
shoes have been given a femi-nine makeover. You will seetheminvariousstyles, colours, fabrics and heels. Dependingon the look you are going forwill depend on the style youchoose.
If you want to add a bit ofbling, go for patent leather ormetallic. If you are a classicdresser, a simple black leatherpair will do.
These can be fun towear asdaywear. They are perfect forspringwhenit’snotquitewarmenough for sandals, but toohotfor boots.
especially since theyare so easy to wear.Select a dress thatsuits your shape andis easy to dress up ordown.
A beautiful dressisworth investing in,so take the time tofind the perfect onefor you.
Styles that fit inthe waist and flair atthe hem suit mostshapes and, onceagain, prints reign.
