KAVEEL SINGH
AFIRE on thewell knownArbee Drive inTongaat has shown the tenacity of themenandwomenwhowork in the area.
The fire occurred on Thursday, 12 Decem-ber in a flat at the Denbecca Centre around10am with a grandfather and his grandsontrapped in a flat on the top floor.
Witnessesnoticedthefireafterblacksmokebegan bellowing out of the window of theapartment.
Passersby began shouting for occupants inthe flat inaneffort toalert themof the incident.
Screams forhelpweresoonheardby localswho rallied together to ensure no lives werelost.
MuziwandileMelusiMkhwanazi (24), whowas loadingtools intoavanoutsidetheelectri-cal shop where he works, sprang into actionwhen he heard that two people were trappedinside.
Others also gathered and tried to break thedoor of the apartment down while notifyingthe authorities.
MoonReddy (69)was inhis roomwhen thefirestarted, whilehisgrandson,Luade (7)wasin the shower.
Within minutes the flat was engulfed insmoke. Reddy said he tried to unlock the doorbut was overcome by the smoke and movedaway.
Luade stepped out of the bathroom andpanickedatthesightofsmoke.Theybothwentto the lounge window to scream for help.
Mkhwanazisaidwhenhesawpeopleontheroad running frantically he followed them.
“Timewasgoing.A lifewasgoing tobe lost.Iwentbackdownstairs andnoticed that a lad-der was placed outside. Without asking Iclimbed up the ladder. I had no plan and hadto improvise,” he said.
“When I got to the window I saw the child. He had no clothes on and looked frightened.”
Mkhwanaziwithhelp fromothersseta lad-der that was two metres short of the windowwhere the terrified boy was waiting.
With seemingly little thought for his ownsafety Mkhwanazi reached up to a satellitedishbracketwhilestandingontopofawindowframe on the second floor.
While balanced on the frame andwith onehandgripping thebracket,Mkhwanazi pulledhimself up, and stood on the bracket.
With the support of the bracket he put theupperhalfofhisbodythroughthewindow, andgrabbed the boy.
Mkhwanazi said he passed him to anotherrescuer, Sphamandla Dlamini (26) who wasbelow him on the ladder.
Dlaminisaidhe, likemanyothers, hadtriedtobreakdown thegateanddoor toget into theflat. He had a wet cloth over his face to avoidbeing suffocated.
Meanwhile, residents eventually brokedown the door and entered the flat.
Netcare 911 spokeswoman, Santi Stein-mann, said the boy and his grandfather weretaken to hospital.
Shadrack Naidoo, building manager ofDenbecca Centre said it had been an unfortu-nate and regrettable incident.
“Howeverweare looking into it,but Idonotknowhow the fire had started as it left irrefut-able damage to the apartment and the build-
ing.”Segree Ramkaran, a resident of Denbecca
Centre. said he did not know how the fire hadstarted.
“Weheardscreamsfromtheapartmentup-stairs, unbeknownst to myself and my hus-band at the time, he checked up on the occu-pants of the above apartment. It was a smokeridden scene and he attempted to break thedoor down as he knew there had been a childinside.
“A failed attempt led to the help of othermembers of the community who eventuallybrought theyoungboytosafety.Theroofof thebuilding collapsed later on.”
An employee of Carpaint Centre, which isan establishmentwithin the Denbecca Centresaid no one knew how the fire began.
“Therearea lot of allegedstories,butnoof-ficial cause or explanation. There had beenscreams heard and some people who werepresent at the time helped as much as theycould until authorities arrived on thescene.”

THE year started with many talk-ing, with some ‘surprise’, that wemade it to 2013 (reference to theMayans believing that the worldwas going to end in 2012).
The year for many has broughttons of successes and good newswhile others were on the other endof the spectrum.
We, at the Weekly, were proudto share these emotions withyou.
The Weekly saw many changesthis year and we would like tothank you for graciously welcomingus into your homes.
Our key focus for 2013 was tofocus more on YOU - sharing your
experiences and stories with otherresidents.
While there are a number ofhighlights, personally and as a na-tion, the death of former presidentNelson Mandela has shadowedeverything else - and rightfullyso.
Madiba definitely left us with a
legacy worth celebrating and thesad news has united the citizens ofthis country that he loved somuch.
Wishing all a wonderful and safefestive season.

WDITORIAL COMMENT
THE article by Kaveel Singh: DEARTONGAAT CITIZENS in the CoastalWeekly 6 December refers.
It stung me like a bee because I amone of those rightly targeted by yourwriter. Yes, I was one of those who didnot attend the special meeting of 28November called by the Tongaat CivicAssociation (TCA) to discuss issuesaround the collapsed Tongaat Mall, owned by Jay Singh.
I can think of a number of excuseswhy I did not attend the meeting – butmy failure to be present is inexcusable.
We allow the Jay Singhs of thisworld to continue to flourish and prosper. It is because we find it expedientto bury our heads in the sand, whencritical issues concerning us are addressed and scrutinised by “others”.
Yet all that these “other” people require is our presence at their meetings,so that allinclusive decisions may betaken.
It is through people like myself, andthe other, more recognisable activistsin the town that a political opportunistis allowed to flaunt himself under thebanner of the ruling party.
This pathetic excuse for a councillorwill shamelessly stand in front of apacked hall, with a supercilious and idiotic grin on his face, virtually beggingpeople to acknowledge his presencewith a wave.
He pretends to know nothing aboutthe court injunctions against Jay Singhto stop his construction work yet, if themall were completed on time, andwithout controversy.
You can imagine the kind of morassour country would be in if Mr Mandelaandhisfellowfreedomfightersignoredthe effects of the Verwoerdian onslaught, and decided to look the otherway.
I believe that if I can start with reassessing my attitudes towards at
tending and participating in forumsdesigned to uplift our communities, then I think that I would go a long way.
I believe that the road to equalityis not absolute – it is largely dependenton all citizens getting together to ruminate on issues of common concern.
I wish I had played a greater role inmaking my objections about government fraud and corruption known atpublic forums like the one organised bythe TCA.
Kaveel Singh is spot on when he implies that my contributions extend asfar as my armchair, because no matterhowmuchIpostulatemy‘pearlsofwisdom’ among my peers, I still need toidentify and support those individualswho work hard to make efforts to bringabout positive changes for all of us.
In his speech at the memorial service for Mandela, Barack Obama, President of the United States, said “We,too, must act on behalf of justice. We,too, must act on behalf of peace… Andthere are too many of us who stand onthe sidelines, comfortable in complacency or cynicism when our voices mustbe heard.” How poignant and relevantthese words are to me!
I am just so sorry that Mr Mandeladid not live long enough to give all thehypocrites, fraudsters and opportunists in his organisation a hard kick ontheir backsides.
My thanks, once again, go to KaveelSingh for his forthrightness and candour.
His straight, hardhitting articlegave me much reason for introspec
